Job summary

Union Settlement in East Harlem is seeking a Program Director to lead the Youth Development & Opportunity program. You will oversee day-to-day operations, hire and train staff, manage the budget, and ensure DYCD contractual obligations are met.

You will also market the program to schools and partners, represent the program at off-site events, and participate in grant writing and fundraising as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education/Social Work or related field preferred, not required.
  • Associate’s degree in Child Development, Elementary Education, Physical Education, Recreation or related field AND Two years of direct experience with children under 13, including supervisory experience.
  • School Age Child Care Credential or other recognized credential for school-age development with two years direct experience.
  • At least three years in youth development programs with educational enrichment for elementary/middle school youth.
  • Knowledge of performance-based contracts.
  • Familiarity with DYCD-funded COMPASS programs preferred.
  • Experience with urban youth ages 5–16; strong youth development principles.
  • Understanding challenges faced by urban youth.
  • Ability to foster a positive environment through supportive relationships.
  • Capacity to empower staff and set high expectations for behavior and attendance.
  • Strong verbal and written skills.
  • Strong, demonstrated computer skills.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong commitment to working with youth.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Implement a program focused on social and emotional support activities tied to project-based learning.
  • Ensure DYCD online database is updated weekly (attendance, work scope, schedule, staffing).
  • Ensure Challenge Based Learning, Clubs, and Health and Wellness workshops for small groups.
  • Create a welcoming, productive environment for participants, families, and community.
  • Maintain strong relationship between school curriculum and COMPASS program; meet with principal and staff.
  • Articulate program vision, mission, and goals to East Harlem CBOs, schools, admins, students, families, and leaders.
  • Collaborate with families to solve problems.
  • Facilitate weekly team meetings with staff and partners.
  • Hold monthly supervisory meetings to discuss performance and challenges.
  • Host monthly parent meetings.
  • Manage privately funded contracts.
  • Ensure program milestones are met.
  • Produce program reports as needed.
  • Participate in Youth Services programmatic committees.
  • Attend leadership meetings across committees and agency.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by Deputy Director and Program Managers.
