Job summary

The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston seeks an Executive Director of Utilities and Energy-Engineering and Facilities to lead plant engineering and energy management for MUHA and MUSC campuses. This senior leader directs 100+ maintenance personnel and oversees contracts totaling millions annually.

The role collaborates with MUSC MUHA leadership to ensure regulatory compliance, optimize energy use, and deliver reliable operations across roughly 10 million square feet of occupied

Qualifications

• Master's degree in a field directly related to the role/organization and an undergraduate engineering degree.
• A minimum of 10 years of general maintenance experience with increasing levels of responsibility and 5+ years of demonstrated experience directly related to utility and energy management.
• Broad working knowledge of HVAC, electrical distribution operations, steam and chilled water operations, building automation systems, energy optimization systems, backup power systems.
• Knowledge of fire/life safety systems in healthcare facilities and/or higher education; experience with large facility capital projects and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

• Supervises a management team including hiring, training, evaluating performance, and budgeting for staffing and expenses.
• Leads facility maintenance programs with emphasis on planning, scheduling, and preventive/predictive maintenance.
• Ensures compliance with NFPA, DHEC, CMS, OSHA and other regulatory requirements for repairs and maintenance.
• Leads a capital infrastructure renewal program around $10M annually.
• Evaluates energy usage data to identify cost reductions and efficiency opportunities.
• Oversees spare parts, supplies, and equipment inventories; ensures 24/7 facility availability.
• Communicates with hospital and university staff to minimize disruption and coordinates with procurement for compliance.
