Job summary

UMass Chan Medical School in Massachusetts is seeking an Assistant Director of Energy Resources to manage daily operations and maintenance of the Power Plant, ensuring reliable steam, chilled water, and electricity for the campus and hospital.

This role leads engineers, electricians, technicians, and contractors to run the facility safely and efficiently, and participates in budgeting and long-term capital planning.

Qualifications

• Equivalent to a Trades Apprenticeship Training with ten years operating experience in a large modern Power Plant.
• Massachusetts First or Second Class Stationary Engineers License required with five years as a First/Second Class Engineer in a modern power plant and two years supervisory experience.
• Knowledge of utility rate structures and deregulation of utilities.
• Strong communication and organizational skills for interfacing with industrial entities and institutions.
• Experience with union contracts and negotiating personnel/university requirements.

Responsibilities

• Develop training programs for Power Plant staff to ensure proper operation of the central utility plant.
• Lead department meetings to foster open communication between staff.
• Assist in development and implementation of department goals.
• Track utility usage and operating expenses across the medical center.
• Assist in capital planning for new or replacement equipment and oversee preventive maintenance.
• Supervise Co-Generation Engineers, High Voltage Electricians, Instrument & Control Technicians and other staff; coordinate external contracts.
• Ensure safe operation of a High Pressure 1,100 psi Power Plant and oversee distribution of high voltage electricity.
• Maintain inventory of spare parts and oversee budgetary controls for maintenance.
• Comply with Inspection and Maintenance Plan and participate in annual training.
