General Statement of Duties:

The Nurse Manager is a member of the healthcare team. He/She is responsible for supervision of the nursing staff under the direction of the Director of Long-Term Care Services. He/She will serve as a liaison between residents and their families, staff, and other disciplines to ensure quality of care and patient satisfaction. He/She works to promote quality of life and keep residents at their highest level of functioning. He/She serves as a resource on the floor to guide.

Supervision Received:

He/She must be self-motivated and able to work autonomously. He/She is accountable to the Director of Long-Term Care Services followed by the Administrator.

Supervision Exercised:

He/She assumes the leadership role on the unit as follows: determining priorities, supervising, guiding, directing, and enforcing all aspects of care. Must be knowledgeable of state and federal regulations.

Typical Physical Demands:

Must be able to fulfill the NF RN Position Description. Must be able to assist with lifting, turning, transferring, and walking patients. Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. Must be able to push carts, wheelchairs, and med. Carts. Must be able to walk long distances on hard surfaces. Must be able to bend, stretch, twist, and stoop. Must be able to sit for extended periods. Able to work 2-12 hour shifts. Must have adequate speech, hearing and vision to perform duties as delineated.

Typical Working Conditions:

Will be in a supervisory role as delineated above.

Essential Duties:
  • Coordinates schedule and approves payroll for the NF staff.
  • Coordinates rounds with physicians and informs them of pertinent information about residents and serves as a liaison to keep physicians abreast of federal and state regulations.
  • Monitors renewal orders and medication administration records to keep current and rectify inconsistencies in conjunction with pharmacy drug regimen review.
  • Prepares annual staff education program through in-service education and 1:1 evaluation of best practices, current standards of care, and infection control methods.
  • Rotates schedule as needed to complete competency skill audits, supervise, and educate staff on all shifts.
  • Coordinates the resident immunization program.
  • Oversees wound management on the unit.
  • Knowledge of the Nursing process through assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation through the MDS, CAAs, care plan, and MDS automation.
  • Able to interpret lab and test results and respond in ER/crisis situation.
  • Able to serve as a resource person with knowledge of policies and procedures, regulations, and the survey process.
  • Able to interpret QI/QM reports.
  • Attends Rehab, Dining Team, Management Team, Mentor Program, QMS, and Staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Keeps informed of residents conditions to guide staff in timely and appropriate interventions to problems.
  • Serves as the long-term care liaison for the organization’s Infection Control Program by working with the Infection Prevention Specialist regarding development of infection control policies and procedures, infection prevention, surveillance, education/intervention, and is designated as lead for the long-term care Antimicrobial Stewardship Program.
  • Shares in on call rotation.
  • Communicates and preserves confidentiality for maintaining comfortable non-threatening relationships and for achieving desired goals with peers, residents, visitors, physicians, and other health care workers.
  • Provides leadership on the unit and adheres to the professional and ethical standards of VGH.
  • Assures resident safety.
  • Assumes responsibility for non-professional growth through active planning and participating in ongoing educational programs.
  • Must be knowledgeable of the Facility Compliance Plan and policies pertaining to the plan.
  • The incumbent shall not have been convicted of a criminal offense related to health care or be listed by the Federal agency as debarred, excluded or ineligible for participation in federally funded health care programs.
  • Able to perform in the job role of RN including the supervision of Paid Nutritional Assistants.
Marginal/Incidental Duties:
  • Operate telephone system, fax machine, copy machine.
  • Serve as Clinical IT support to staff.
  • Volunteer for extra duty.
  • Participate in community education and awareness programs.
  • Contribute to peer education through in-services.
  • Attend and participate in hospital committees as directed.
  • Advance professional nursing career through college credit courses to advance degree.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Assist to cover floor or take call when assigned.
Performance Requirements:

Able to perform within the scope of licensure for an RN. Good communication and interpersonal skills. VGH expects employees to interact positively and cooperatively with patients, residents, families, visitors, co-workers, and supervisors at all times.

Education:

Current Iowa licensure as an RN. Graduated from a state-approved nursing program as an ADN, Diploma, or BSN degreed RN. Maintains current BCLS certification.

Experience:

Previous MDS and/or nursing management experience preferred, but not required, will train.
