Responsibilities
The Director of Nursing is responsible for the clinical and management aspects of the Department(s). Responsibilities include planning, directing, supervising, and coordinating the Department(s).
Collaborates with staff, management, and physicians to ensure quality and patient care are provided with optimal patient outcomes. Provides leadership, motivation, and vision to ensure continued quality patient care. Contributes to the CHI Saint Joseph Health Mission and Vision by planning, designing, implementing, and maintaining programs, policies, and management systems in patient care administration. Leads service integration between departments to meet patient-centered needs and achieve quality, cost-effective care improvements.
Essential Functions
HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT
- Establishes processes to define qualifications, responsibilities, competencies, and staffing needs aligned with CHI Saint Joseph Health's mission, vision, and values.
- Utilizes a multi-skilled, patient-focused staffing plan to meet customer and service needs, addressing staffing guidelines, productivity, and care plans to ensure safe, high-quality service.
- Develops effective departmental work teams to assess, revise, and improve outcomes.
- Provides clear, frequent performance feedback based on individual needs and job requirements.
- Facilitates continuing education and training focused on quality improvement, equipment use, interpersonal skills, customer service, and leadership.
- Ensures staff attendance at mandatory education sessions.
- Ensures all new staff complete orientation within designated timeframes and are knowledgeable of policies and procedures.
- Maintains current records of staff licensure and certification in accordance with Joint Commission standards.
- Encourages team confidence through recognition and reinforcement of successes.
- Promotes ongoing problem-solving through team collaboration.
- Builds teams capable of addressing immediate issues, moving quickly, and achieving planned results.

FISCAL MANAGEMENT
- Maintains a business plan aligned with the organization’s mission, vision, and values.
- Adjusts business plans based on service demand and resource availability.
- Communicates plans effectively to staff and stakeholders.
- Implements process improvements to enhance workflow efficiency.
MATERIALS MANAGEMENT
- Utilizes systematic planning for material and capital needs based on available resources.
- Assesses and projects material and capital needs annually and over three years.
- Manages material and supply usage effectively through ongoing systems.
MANAGEMENT OF INFORMATION AND SUPPORT
- Creates a work environment that develops leadership and accountability.
- Empowers employees by delegating decision-making to those directly serving customers.
- Implements mechanisms for measuring and improving service quality and outcomes.
