Job summary

HousingPlus is seeking a Director of Human Resources to lead a growing HR team in New York. You will report to the Chief Operating Officer and shape people strategies for a multi-site organization.

The role requires 7–10+ years in HR, nonprofit experience, and knowledge of federal, state, and local labor laws. Responsibilities include recruitment, employee relations, performance management, compliance, and fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred.
  • 7–10+ years HR experience with leadership roles.
  • SHRM certifications (SHRM-SCP, SHRM-CP, SPHR, or PHR).
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local labor laws.
  • Experience managing recruitment, employee relations, performance management, and HR compliance.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee HR across multiple sites and remote teams.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local labor laws.
  • Lead recruitment, onboarding, and employee relations programs.
  • Drive performance management and HR policy development.
  • Foster diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership on people strategies.

Job description

Title: Director of Human Resources

Report to: Chief Operating Officer

Status: Full-Time/Exempt

Compensation: $105,000 - $115,000/ Annually

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, Minimum of 1 -2 days remote option available.

Office Location: New York, NY 10017

The mission of HousingPlus is to provide permanent, affordable housing and comprehensive services to women, including women with children, and gender expansive people to support them in overcoming poverty, homelessness, addiction, trauma and the effects of incarceration, in order to build lives of stability, and to define and realize goals for themselves and their families. Since its beginning in 2002, HousingPlus has worked to address the lack of housing and services for women who have historically been underserved and marginalized, especially women impacted by the criminal justice system, and for the past 10 years, also female Veterans. Over the next three years, HousingPlus’ programs will continue to grow, along with its commitment to serving vulnerable populations.

REQUIREMENTS:

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Experience in a non-profit or mission-driven organization.
  • Experience managing HR for multi-site or remote teams.
  • Familiarity with grant compliance or HR requirements for federally funded programs

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Development, or related field, Master’s degree in HR preferred.
  • 7–10+ years of progressive HR experience, including leadership roles.
  • HR certifications such as SHRM-SCP, SHRM-CP, SPHR, or PHR.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local labor laws.
  • Experience managing recruitment, employee relations, performance management, and HR compliance.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
