Job description

Title: Director of Environmental Health and Safety

Position Purpose:

This position is responsible for coordinating the environmental, health and safety mission for the college. The position is responsible for developing and promoting programs addressing student fire safety and employee workplace safety as well as programs which minimize environmental impacts.

Job Duties:

  1. Hazard/Risk Identification and Resolution:
    • Develop and manage safety and environmental audits and inspections;
    • Assist management, employees and students in resolving safety and environmental violations, issues and concerns;
    • Assess needs and coordinate the acquisition of appropriate resources and equipment to ensure a safe, healthy and sustainable work, learning and living environment;
    • Keep current with changes in regulatory requirements and address all safety and environmental regulations which apply to the college including development of programs and meeting reporting requirements.
  2. Training, Awareness and Prevention:
    • Develop and administer a comprehensive safety training program covering topics relevant to work at the college;
    • Develop and administer a comprehensive environmental training program covering topics important to safe and sustainable operations;
    • Promote awareness of safety and environmental issues through participation in campus committees and by advocating for campus wide involvement in safety and environmental initiatives.
    • Author and keep current Emergency response plans for known campus hazards, such as an ammonia response plan, bloodborne pathogen program, Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure plan, etc.
    • Manage day to day EHS operations including hazardous and universal waste collection, Eyewash station inspection compliance, oil tank inspection and monitoring, and other EHS related program areas. Partner with Facility Services to incorporate inspection programs within the existing Work Order CMMS system.
  3. Compliance Monitoring and Reporting:
    • Keep current with changes in regulatory requirements and address all safety and environmental regulations which apply to the college;
    • Prepare and submit all required regulatory reports for State, Federal and local Safety and environmental agencies;
    • Monitor college compliance with State, Federal and local regulations;
    • Prepare and update all required programs and conduct training relevant to these programs.
    • Maintain applicable regulatory licenses and pay annual fees.
    • Schedule and facilitate sampling and analysis to ensure environmental and safety compliance.
  4. Supervision of Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator:
    • Collaborate with Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator in the formulation of department goals and individual development goals;
    • Provide regular feedback on performance, and conduct performance development functions using Success Factors;
    • Provide up to date information about college policies, opportunities and challenges;
    • Facilitate effective and productive performance through coaching, counseling, recognition and discipline as necessary.
  5. Resource to College and Management:
    • Serve as a subject matter expert on technical safety and environmental matters including OSHA, EPA, Maine DEP, or other regulatory agencies regarding hazardous chemicals, hazardous waste, emergency response, industrial hygiene, life safety, and workplace safety;
    • Serve as chair of the college Safety/Ergonomics Committee.
    • Serve as a member of the Institutional Biosafety Committee.
    • Serve on the Research Compliance Working Group.
  6. Human Resource Support and Administration:
    • Assist management in drafting appropriate policies and procedures related to Environmental Health and Safety;
    • Manage Workers’ Compensation and return to work programs;
    • Participate in the development and implementation of Human Resources initiatives such as New Employee Orientation, Staff Enrichment and Performance Development.
    • Use current technology to provide access to environmental, health and safety programs and policies on the Human Resources website.
  7. Additional Job Functions:
    • Assist with special Human Resource office projects.
    • Represent Human Resources Department with other campus committees and Organizations.
    • Serve as a key member of the Senior Emergency Response Group (SERG) and as a potential incident commander in the event of a campus emergency.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science field is required.

Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of experience in safety and environmental management.
  • At least three years at the supervisory/management level.
  • Additional credentials – licensures or education – is preferred.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Commitment to equity and inclusion, and serving the needs of a culturally and educationally diverse community.
  • A thorough knowledge of regulations is essential.
  • Management experience is required, both as direct management of department personnel and as indirect manager of environmental and safety policies and regulations among employees who are not direct reports.
  • Training administration is also essential.
  • Computer skills including webpage management are preferred.
