Job summary

Pennant Services is seeking an experienced Director of Engineering to lead the Application Development team for post‑acute healthcare products. You will shape architecture, delivery, and AI‑native practices, partnering with clinical and operations leaders to ensure secure, scalable software.

You will drive speed, reliability, and cost efficiency in a healthcare setting while mentoring engineers and delivering measurable improvements in AI‑assisted development and cloud delivery.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, incl. 3+ years leading engineers as a people manager.
• Led engineering at a startup or growth‑stage company through AI adoption, with measurable before‑and‑after results.
• Personally built and shipped production software with AI coding agents within the past 6 months.
• Designed and operated a multi‑service, cloud‑hosted system with a production data layer and third‑party integrations.
• Established a quality system (CI/CD, automated testing, code review standards, incident response).
• Experience with HIPAA, SOC 2, or comparable controls, or a credible plan for PHI handling and access control.
• Strong written and verbal communication, with ability to explain tradeoffs to senior leaders.
• Bachelor's degree in CS/Engineering or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical direction of all digital products and platform roadmap.
• Set standards for HIPAA‑grade engineering, PHI handling, audit logging, and least‑privilege access.
• Keep the platform operable: observability, on‑call, incident response, and cost management.
• Make AI coding agents the default for design, implementation, testing, and review.
• Build evaluation suites, automated tests, CI gates, and review standards.
• Measure delivery metrics and report AI impact and where it helps or hurts.
• Partner with Data Science on deploying predictive models safely into workflows.
• Lead, mentor, and develop the development team; conduct reviews and career paths.
• Recruit, hire, and retain engineers; own the interview loop and raise the bar.
• Collaborate with Product, IT, and Ops to align priorities and constraints.
