United Way of East Central Iowa is seeking a Staffing Director for The Commons on 16th to lead the 24-hour Resident Support team. You’ll hire, train, schedule, supervise, and develop staff while ensuring compliance and high-quality service delivery in a Housing First environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Social Work, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or related field preferred.
• Minimum of three years of supervisory or leadership experience.
• Minimum of one year experience in human services, housing, shelter operations, behavioral health, or a related field preferred.
• Experience supervising employees in a 24-hour operation preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
• Ability to complete all required background checks.

Responsibilities

• Recruit, interview, hire, onboard, train, and supervise Resident Support Specialists.
• Develop employee work schedules to ensure continuous 24-hour staffing coverage.
• Manage staff attendance, leave requests, scheduling changes, and emergency shift coverage.
• Conduct regular supervision meetings, performance evaluations, coaching, and professional development.
• Address employee performance concerns through progressive coaching and disciplinary processes when appropriate.
• Foster a positive, collaborative, and trauma-informed workplace culture.
• Oversee daily operations of the Commons on 16th facility to ensure consistent policy implementation.
• Monitor shift activities and ensure smooth communication between shifts.
• Review incidents and documentation for quality and follow-up.
• Coordinate resident intake, move-in, and unit turnover with program staff.
• Ensure a safe, clean, welcoming environment and coordinate facility concerns with maintenance.
• Monitor compliance with policies, safety, confidentiality, and resident expectations.
• Review incidents and develop corrective actions or training opportunities.
• Develop onboarding plans for new employees.
• Coordinate ongoing staff training related to trauma-informed care, de-escalation, safety, documentation, crisis response, and agency policies.
• Promote staff development and best practices in resident engagement.
• Ensure building security procedures, visitor management, curfew expectations, and emergency protocols are followed.
• Respond to significant incidents requiring supervisory intervention.
• Serve as a resource for staff during complex resident situations.
• Participate in on-call rotation as assigned.
• Collaborate with Homeless Systems Manager, case management, healthcare providers, outreach teams, and partners.
• Participate in leadership meetings, case conferences, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Assist with implementing new procedures and priorities.
• Monitor staffing patterns and identify operational needs.
• Assist with operational reporting and data collection.
• Participate in budget planning related to staffing and operational needs.
• Maintain personnel records and required training documentation.
