Job summary

Covista is seeking a Director, Applied AI to lead the Applied AI team within Enterprise Data & Insights. You will own the AI portfolio across multiple PODs, govern architecture, and ensure safe, valuable automation for Covista’s school brands.

You will build and mentor a core team, manage vendor relationships, and drive Responsible AI governance, model risk, and evaluation practices, working with Data Science and Engineering leaders.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Engineering, or related field.
• Master's Degree in CS/AI or MBA preferred.
• 10+ years in enterprise technology leadership.
• 5+ years leading AI/ML or data/platform engineering teams.
• Experience in higher education, healthcare, or complex regulated environments.
• Experience with agentic AI platforms (Vertex AI Agent Engine, ADK, MCP) and governance.
• Deep expertise in agentic AI architectures and enterprise platforms.
• Proven track record building and scaling AI/ML/PLT teams.
• Experience implementing Responsible-AI governance (risk tiering, model cards, bias evaluation, red-teaming, FERPA/HIPAA/GLBA).
• Strong vendor/partner management skills (SOW governance, scorecards).
• Strategic financial acumen (budget ownership, build-vs-buy-vs-partner).
• Strong stakeholder management across domains.
• Demonstrated leadership and excellent communication skills.
• Highly organized, able to manage multiple initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Own Applied AI strategy across PODs and align with EDI roadmap.
• Lead end-to-end automation work from deterministic RPA to full agentic systems.
• Govern platform architecture and vendor delivery across all brands.
• Build and mentor core team and oversee hiring plans.
• Ensure Responsible AI posture with risk & safety governance and eval practices.
• Manage delivery partners (SOW governance, scorecards, escalation).
• Oversee AI evaluation harness and data protection within Covista IP.
• Collaborate with Data Science, Data Engineering, Analytics leadership.
• Maintain boundary with other Covista AI teams and translate demand into backlog.
• Perform other duties as assigned and ensure policy compliance.
