Bolton & Menk - Design Engineer, EIT

Bolton & Menk has an exciting opportunity for a Design Engineer, EIT, to join our Transportation team in our Des Moines or Ames office. This entry-level civil engineering role seeks an EIT who will help foster our mission that All People Should Live in Safe, Sustainable, and Beautiful Communities. The majority of your time will be spent assisting project managers and engineers in design and construction activities on transportation projects. This position is open to December 2024, May 2025 graduates, or an experienced EIT with 1-3 years of experience.

What You Will Be Doing:

• Assist Project Engineers with design and construction phase activities on transportation projects
• Perform basic design computations, preliminary layout and design, research, and prepare rough drafts of reports and feasibility studies
• Assist with project plans, specifications, and cost/quantity estimates
• Support traffic corridor studies related to operations, safety, modal integration, and access management
• Assist with designing traffic control devices, signals, signing, pavement markings, lighting, ITS, work zones, and detours, including infrastructure improvements
• Participate in construction observation activities such as staking, documentation, testing, oversight, and interactions with contractors, residents, and city staff

What We Are Looking For:

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college
• Certified Engineer-in-Training or ability to obtain within 12 months
• Prior experience in infrastructure design or construction observation
• Knowledge of CAD and design software (AutoCAD Civil3D, MicroStation)
• Developing knowledge of traffic software (e.g., SYNCHRO, SIMTraffic, VISSIM) preferred
• Willingness to travel during construction season
• Valid driver’s license for site visits and facilities access
