Job description

Description

The Project Delivery team of the Hennepin County Public Works Transportation department is seeking a Design Engineer with experience in traffic engineering to join the design division. This position will be responsible for performing traffic engineering design functions as well as all phases of project development for roadway reconstruction projects.

Location and hours:

This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Public Works Facility, 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, MN 55340, and remotely as job duties require. There is no public transportation to the facility in Medina. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but may vary depending on projects. While this position is designated as hybrid, hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

About The Position Type

In This Position, You Will

• Prepare, perform tasks in the design, and review of plans, special provisions, and cost estimates for traffic engineering design elements including signals, signing, striping, lighting, staging, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and temporary traffic control by applying current policies, practices, and standards.
• Perform, complete, and coordinate the development and review of traffic engineering analysis, modeling, and reporting.
• Serve as project manager on select in-house and consultant design projects and/or serve as a project liaison to city or MnDOT led projects on county facilities.
• Work closely with other jurisdictions and committees to achieve project consent.
• Create, lead, and facilitate presentations and discussions at internal and external project-related meetings.
• Research and prepare complex engineering reports, narratives, charts, graphs, and visual aids.
• Assist as needed to other divisions within the department.

Need to have:

• Bachelor's degree or higher in civil engineering or other engineering field appropriate to the position.
• Registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT) with a State Board of Registration or the ability to acquire registration within six months of hire.
• A valid driver's license, the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit, and access to reliable transportation to visit the job site in Medina.

Nice to have:

• Experience with traffic engineering design tasks including signals, signing, striping, and temporary traffic control.
• Conducting traffic engineering and operations analysis and preparing related reports.
• Experience with trip generation, traffic forecasts, safety analysis, traffic signal timing, traffic counting programs, and warrant analysis.
• Supervising, coordinating, and evaluating the work of technical staff.
• Using MicroStation/Bentley Open Roads, SignCAD, AutoTURN, Synchro/SimTraffic, VISSIM, and RODEL.
• Working in roadway design.
• Working with MnDOT and State Aid.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, demonstrate high organization levels, coordinate work, communicate effectively, read and interpret manuals and plans, and prioritize tasks.
