Job summary

Southern Company seeks a DERMS Operations Specialist in Atlanta to lead real-time and near-real-time integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) on the electric distribution system. The role focuses on safe, reliable operation within grid constraints, serving as a technical bridge among operators, planning, IT/OT, and DER programs.

Initially, the position follows a hybrid schedule (four days at the office in Atlanta).

Qualifications

• A minimum of 5 years of experience in power delivery is required.
• Distribution or Transmission Control Center experience is strongly preferred.
• A bachelor's degree or relevant work experience is preferred.
• Experience in renewables, storage, and/or analytics is a plus.
• Experience in data validation and alarm management is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Maintain visibility of the distribution system and dispatch distributed resources based on generation and load forecasts.
• Provide SME support on electric grid switching and operations to help implement DERMS within a vertically-integrated utility and train teams.
• Test and troubleshoot DERMS outputs for forecasting, optimization, and monitoring; validate inputs, topology, telemetry, attributes, constraints, and business rules.
• Create test scripts, regression checks, issue logs, and defect documentation for vendor and internal teams.
• Suggest interface improvements and operational reports while developing tools and processes for new resource interconnections.
• Support integration between DERMS, ADMS, GIS, SCADA, AMI, CIS and related vendor apps; participate in storm restoration and post-event troubleshooting.
