Job summary

MBTA is seeking a Deputy Director of Mechanical and Facility Engineering to lead planning, design, construction, and maintenance of mechanical and facility systems across MBTA stations, buildings, and infrastructure.

Responsibilities include directing multidisciplinary teams for HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, energy management, and other critical building systems, ensuring compliance with codes, safety standards, and sustainability goals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible engineering experience.
  • Two or more years in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
  • PE licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Experience with HVAC, fire protection, plumbing, and mechanical systems for large facilities or transit infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in CAD, project management software, and MS Office.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and leadership skills.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Willingness to respond to emergencies 24/7.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and technical leadership for mechanical and facility engineering functions.
  • Oversee development, review, and approval of designs, specifications, and standards for capital and maintenance projects.
  • Direct and coordinate work of engineers and consultants to meet timelines and budgets.
  • Supervise and mentor engineers and staff; conduct performance evaluations.
  • Review design submissions for technical accuracy and compliance with MBTA standards.
  • Serve as primary technical advisor to Director of Engineering and Support.
  • Coordinate with MBTA departments, agencies, and partners on initiatives.
  • Oversee preventive maintenance and reliability programs; lifecycle management.
  • Prepare cost estimates and support engineering budgets; manage procurement.
  • Lead investigations on operational challenges and emerging technology opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with codes, safety, environmental, energy regulations; promote sustainability.
  • Represent department in meetings and with executives, contractors, and the public.
  • Act as Acting Director in the absence of the Director.
