Position: Deputy Director, Human Resources
Reports to: Chief Operating Officer

Scope: This exempt full-time position is based in Washington, D.C. The Deputy Director of Human Resources supports the Chief Operating Officer in overseeing the Human Resources (HR) department's operations, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and compliance with employment laws. This role involves managing HR programs, policies, and initiatives while providing strategic guidance and leadership to the HR team.

The Deputy Director of Human Resources will be responsible for a wide range of functions, including but not limited to:

General Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and implementing HR strategies, policies, and procedures.
  • Oversee daily HR operations, including recruitment, employee relations, benefits administration, and performance management.
  • Provide guidance and support to managers and employees on HR-related matters.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Participate in employee relations activities, including conflict resolution.
  • Manage HR projects, such as training programs, diversity initiatives, and organizational development efforts.
  • Analyze HR metrics and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Supervise and mentor HR staff, fostering professional growth and development.
  • Act as a liaison between the HR department and other organizational units.’
  • Oversee departmental budget.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, information technology, business administration, or a related field, with Master’s preferred.
  • Experience:
    • A minimum of 10 years of HR experience, preferably in the non-profit sector with international development exposure.
  • Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:
    • Knowledge of labor laws and HR best practices.
    • Ability to work in a multicultural environment and handle sensitive information with discretion.
    • Experience in international development or working with global teams.
    • Familiarity with HR software and tools.
    • Strong conceptual, verbal, and written communication skills.
    • Ability to take initiative, organize tasks, and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment, ensuring deadlines are met with attention to detail.
    • Skilled in building strong, trusting relationships to gain support and achieve desired outcomes.
    • Capable of managing multiple competing priorities simultaneously.
    • Comfortable working in an environment with international objectives.
    • Flexible and able to engage with individuals at all levels with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Computer Skills:
    • Proficiency withMS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook required.
  • Licenses and Certifications:
    • HR Certification preferred – HRIP, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR or SPHR
  • Working Conditions:
    • Anticipated hours worked each week: 40
    • Travel required: 0-10%
    • Domestic and International travel may be required.

  • Additional Requirements:
    • U.S. work authorization required.
THE SALARY RANGE FOR THIS POSITION IS $104,000-$131,000
