Job summary

Maryland Department of General Services (DGS) seeks a Deputy Chief of Maintenance Engineering to oversee design, inspection, and repair of building systems and utilities. You will manage budgets across program open space, underground tanks, hazardous materials, and capital projects, and supervise maintenance engineering staff across statewide properties.

Qualifications

• Five years of project management experience, including three in a managerial role.
• Experience overseeing multi-agency or multi-site facility inventories.
• Hands-on management of environmental compliance programs (hazardous materials, underground tanks).
• Strong analytical and organizational skills for multiple projects with competing deadlines.
• Knowledge of the Office of State Procurement policies.
• Experience preparing and executing public-sector capital maintenance budgets and navigating procurement regulations.
• Familiarity with funding programs such as Program Open Space and Facility Renewal Funds.
• Experience using public-sector ERP or asset management systems to manage project lifecycles, schedules, and financial updates.

Responsibilities

• This position is the primary backup for the Chief of FED and will act on their behalf when the Chief is unavailable.
• Manage project management, hazardous materials, roofing and assessment programs to assure timely completion.
• Establish policies and procedures for these programs and revise as necessary.
• Set goals, standards and controls to meet program objectives.
• Coordinate with management and executive level personnel from DGS and other agencies regarding requirements, priorities, budget limits, fund sources and other matters.
• Supervise positions in project management, hazardous materials, roofing and assessment programs including facilities inspections, project justifications, AIE selection, bidding, award of contracts and completing projects on schedule and within budget.
