Job Description
The Department Manager 2 manages the Juvenile Detention staff at the Wayne County Detention Facility. The Department Manager 2 is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the facility during business and non-business hours, including holidays and weekends.
Required Tasks
- Provide leadership to Juvenile Detention Specialist (JDS) staff.
- Oversee and develop plans for pod management of residential care and youth programming.
- Manage Operations Shift Assignment Schedules for JDS Supervisors and Juvenile Detention Specialist staff.
- Review and approve all log books and operational reports completed by JDS Supervisors.
- Train and evaluate Juvenile Detention Specialists.
- Plan, supervise, and coordinate daily operations including crisis intervention, confinements, lockdowns, staffing shortages, and Temporary Disaster Plans.
- Supervise and direct JDS Supervisors on a daily basis.
- Communicate effectively with JDF staff, JDS Supervisors, administrators, management, outside agencies, and community groups.
- Maintain current knowledge of services to assist and educate staff in juvenile rehabilitation and detention care.
- Manage the facility during non-business hours, ensuring efficient staff operation while maintaining safety and security.
- Conduct departmental investigations, issue disciplinary actions, and develop training and Corrective Action Plans for staff.
- Oversee operations such as Master Control, Intake, Admissions, Classification, Transportation, Key Control, Visitation, Medical, and Specialized Housing Pods.
- Conduct facility rounds to ensure security and proper functioning of equipment and procedures.
- Complete and submit daily shift reports.
- Transport juveniles via County vehicle to appointments or emergencies as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, Criminal Justice, Psychology, or a related field.
- Five (5) years of experience in a secure correctional setting or child caring institution.
- Two (2) years of supervisory experience.
- Valid State of Michigan Driver's license with an acceptable and safe driving record.
Special Conditions
- Employees must be cleared to work in a childcaring institution by Child Protective Services. Candidates who have lived outside Michigan must obtain clearance from that state.
