Job description

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under general supervision, the Dental Assistant 1 will assist the faculty, resident dentists, and DMD students in the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences with day-to-day operations of the Admitting Clinic and Oral Medicine Clinic in the department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Ensure cleanliness/readiness of the clinic. Prepare clinic for the day¿s schedule. Following daily operations, clean and wipe down all equipment following established safety and infection control procedures. (20%)
Stock supplies in clinic/cubicles as needed. Check equipment to ensure that it is in good working order. Report/record all repair orders. (10%)
Provide chair-side dental assistance for the faculty and residents of the department. Assist with patient seating and clinic flow. Review patient schedule to determine efficient use of clinical personnel time. (25%)
Coordinate and assist in routine procedures including taking radiographs, taking impressions and bite registration. Provide proper sterilized instruments for faculty and residents. (15%)
Monitor all dental and office supplies usage. Prepare pre-requisition to re-order materials and supplies as needed with assistance of clinic manager and chair. (10%)
Perform administrative duties including scheduling appointments, answering patient calls and documenting patient calls. (15%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCITONS

Perform other duties as assigned. (5%)

CONTACTS

Department: Continuous contact with department chair and faculty, dispensary staff, receptionists, graduate department specialty clinics and clinical instructors to facilitate patient care.

University: Infrequent to no contact anticipated.

External: Continuous contact with patients to facilitate care.

Students: Continuous contact with graduate students as it relates to daily patient flow.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.

QUALIFICAITONS

Experience: A minimum of 3 months to 1 year of dental assisting experience required.

Education/Licensing: High school education, dental assistant certification, current radiology license and annual CPR certification are required.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Basic knowledge of computer software.
Basic knowledge of insurance codes, authorizations, and forms.
Ability to meet consistent attendance.
Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This work is performed in a clinical setting and requires general knowledge of chemicals, blood borne pathogens, OSHA requirements and lab safety. Required personal protective equipment includes mask, gloves and safety glasses when appropriate.
