Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in an appropriate discipline for faculty status.

Responsibilities

The Dean of the Faculty reports to the Provost and is an essential part of the academic leadership team of the University, serving on the Provost's Council. The Dean of the Faculty is responsible for providing oversight for the management and daily operations of the academic departments.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION:
  1. Provide guidance and advice to faculty on matters of instructional policy, and on the implementation of the University's strategic plan.
  2. Oversee course scheduling and faculty workload; develop new scheduling procedures to ensure efficiencies within the academic program.
  3. Facilitate the implementation of departmental outcomes assessment plans; accreditation processes and requirements; and the implementation of the general education program of study.
  4. Recommend faculty appointments, conduct faculty evaluations, and assist with matters related to faculty renewals, tenure and promotion.
  5. Assist with the development of the budget for the academic departments and monitor its efficient operation.
  6. Serve on University-wide committees, councils, and task forces as assigned; and participate in all University functions such as convocations, commencements, and faculty meetings.
  7. Work with faculty members, department chairs and university committees to address curricular and instructional programs, policies and administrative procedures that reflect best practices.
  8. Represent the division at meetings and conferences both on and off campus.
  9. Supervise the use of facilities assigned to the division and plan for future needs.
  10. Address problems not resolved at the department level.
  11. Administer the policies of the governing boards and university.
  12. Assist in fundraising and encouragement of faculty grant writing to support academic programs.
  13. Facilitate the implementation of articulation agreements and collaborative relationships with other universities and colleges.
  14. Perform additional duties as assigned.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Handle sensitive issues and information with confidentiality and discretion.
Education, Training, and/or Experience:
  • An earned doctorate with instructional and scholarly academic credentials appropriate for faculty status in a department within the University.
    • A minimum of seven years of scholarly and progressively responsible administrative experience in higher education.
      • Significant experience with evaluation and mentoring of faculty, and with the development of curriculum and interdisciplinary programs.
        • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and promote institutional objectives, including consensus building.
          • Excellent communication, interpersonal and community building skills.
            • Experience within institution-wide accreditation and assessment.
              • A successful track record of innovation and leadership qualities needed to build an institution of distinction for the future.
                • Experience working with faculty unions is preferred.
