Job summary

Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa is seeking a part-time Communications Clerk to operate the switchboard and deliver exemplary service to the public, physicians, and staff. You will handle paging, on-call scheduling, and emergency communications to ensure timely responses across departments.

The role requires strong communication skills, ability to work flexible hours, and adherence to hospital policies. Prior switchboard experience is preferred; BLS/ACLS/PALS may be required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; business college coursework preferred.
• Experience with switchboard operations is preferred; basic computer operations.
• Able to follow approved scripting and hospital procedures.

Responsibilities

• Answers phone and directs calls using approved scripting.
• Operates paging system to program, exchange, or issue pagers.
• Program and order loaner pagers for providers or colleagues.
• Inputs and updates on-call scheduling sheets (Smartsheet).
• Coordinates and posts on-call schedules online.
• Answers calls after hours for physician offices.
• Handles emergency calls and knows code procedures.
• Uses approved communication for fire and other alarm systems.
• Notifies personnel for emergency situations and mass notifications.
