Job summary

City of Long Beach's Department of Community Development seeks a Data Intern to support the Planning Bureau. The role focuses on gathering, cleaning, and visualizing data to support housing production, dashboards, and reporting requirements in a municipal planning context.

You'll develop data pipelines, create documentation, and collaborate with Advance and Current Planning Teams while gaining hands-on experience in local government data science.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a graduate program in Political Science, Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Graphic Design, Geology, Geography, Planning, Urban Planning, Engineering, Public Administration, Public Policy, Business Administration, Accounting, Marketing, or closely related field.
• Recently graduated from a master's degree program (within one year of application submission).

Responsibilities

• Support Planning staff with data management, analysis, and research.
• Explore potential efficiencies in existing data systems and identify opportunities for streamline and automation.
• Help develop and update public-facing data visualization platforms, such as the City’s Housing Dashboards.
• Develop data collection pipelines to fulfill reporting requirements across Planning activities.
• Create process documentation, including work instructions and data flow diagrams.
• Collaborate with the Advance Planning and Current Planning Teams to implement data projects across the Bureau.
• Provide assistance to the Advance Planning Officer and Current Planning Officer, as needed.
