Job summary

WMJ Services in Grand Rapids, MI is seeking a Custodian Team Lead to supervise a night crew and ensure cleaning standards. You will manage scheduling, delegate tasks, and coach a diverse team to meet performance goals.

The role requires strong communication, reliability, and hands-on leadership. Starting pay is $18/hour with comprehensive benefits and a Monday–Friday schedule.

Qualifications

• Leadership experience supervising 10+ employees in a nightly shift.
• Willingness to work a consistent schedule with occasional longer hours.
• Background in janitorial services is preferred.
• Strong verbal and written communication; capable of guiding a diverse team.
• Experience in training, delegating tasks and driving performance.
• Professional demeanor with clients and team; solutions-focused.
• Familiarity with budgeting, labor forecasting and ops planning.
• Accountable, honest and focused on continuous improvement.
• Able to stand/walk for long periods during shifts.
• Able to lift up to 25 pounds and use cleaning equipment.
• Comfortable using vacuum and floor cleaners and similar tools.
• Able to read and understand safety-related instructions.

Job Skills / Requirements

Requirements of the Custodian Team Lead:

• Prior leadership experience in a supervisory or similar role, overseeing 10+ employees on a nightly basis
• Ability to work a consistent schedule with flexibility for occasional extended hours as needed
• Background in the janitorial industry preferred
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to lead a diverse team
• Skilled in training, task delegation and motivating team to meet performance goals
• Professional demeanor with team and customer, solutions driven and respectful of client directives
• Familiarity with budgeting, labor forecasting and basic operational planning
• Accountable, honest and willing to take ownership of outcomes and continuous improvement
• Ability to walk and stand for prolonged periods
• Ability to bend, stoop, reach and lift up to 25 pounds
• Ability to use motorized equipment (vacuum, hand operated floor cleaners)
• Ability to read and comprehend instructions and safety related materials

Must be able to pass a background check

Schedule: Monday-Friday

Shift Time: Roughly 4:00PM – 1:00AM (Shift times may vary occasionally)

Starting Pay Rate: $18.00
