Job summary

Columbia Basin College in Washington state seeks a Custodian 3 to lead the team in cleaning classrooms, offices, restrooms and common areas, ensuring safety and SDS compliance. The role reports to the Custodian 4 and supports campus operations including snow removal.

You will train staff, schedule shifts, perform floor care, operate equipment, manage supplies, and help maintain a welcoming campus environment that supports daily operations and student success.

Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of experience in custodial, general or building maintenance, grounds keeping, semi-skilled carpentry, electrical and/or plumbing repair work.
  • Experience with custodial supplies, chemicals, and floor care products, equipment and methods;
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English;
  • Current ISSA Custodial Certification or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire; and
  • Possession of a valid U.S. driver's license or ability to obtain one before date of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform custodial duties including cleaning, restroom service, and waste disposal.
  • Instruct staff on cleaning techniques and safety; inspect work and enforce standards.
  • Follow SDS instructions and safety policies; report maintenance needs.
  • Inspect buildings for security and coordinate repairs or improvements.
  • Operate custodial equipment and perform floor care and carpet cleaning.
  • Oversee supply inventory and coordinate orders with Purchasing.

Columbia Basin College ("CBC" or the "College") seeks a Custodian 3to lead the team in performing the general cleaning of classrooms,offices, restrooms, and common spaces; servicing dispensers;handling waste and recycling; operating custodial equipment; andfollowing all safety and SDS requirements. This position inspectsfacilities for cleanliness and security issues, reports maintenanceneeds, responds to customer requests, assists other shifts asneeded, and supports campus operations during inclement weatherthrough snow removal, debris cleanup, and deicing across CBClocations. This position plays a key role in maintaining a safe,functional, and visually welcoming campus environment that supportsdaily operations and student success. This position reports to theCustodian 4.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead and perform the work with custodial shift as assigned intheir performance of custodial duties which includes generalcleaning and housekeeping duties of buildings/facilities includingrefilling restroom dispensers, and servicing of restrooms/showers,common areas, classrooms and offices; clean whiteboards anderasers; dust and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors;replace interior light bulbs, collect and dispose of garbage andtrash and recycle containers;
  • Instruct custodial staff on proper cleaning techniques andsafety practices for various custodial duties; assign and inspectwork assignments for completion; ensure departmental/facilitycleanliness and safety standards are met and take necessarycorrective action for deficiencies;
  • Follow written and/or verbal SDS instructions regarding the useof chemicals, supplies and equipment; comply with safety policiesand procedures;
  • Check or inspect buildings for security purposes (unlockeddoors or windows) and report unauthorized occupants; and/or assistin determining condition of facility and equipment and takenecessary corrective action for deficiencies; report need forrepair and/or maintenance; order, receive and distribute custodialsupplies and equipment to employees;
  • Operate and maintain assigned power equipment and hand toolsincluding vacuum, buffers/polishers, broom, mop, squeegee, highpressure washer, ladder for the cleaning and general maintenance offloors, walls, carpets, and furniture;
  • Perform detailed floor care projects and other cleaningprojects as scheduled; strip, clean, buff, and apply finish tofloors, use high speed floor buffers/polishers, vacuum and cleancarpets; sweep and wash sidewalks and/or stairs as needed;
  • Maintain inventory (e.g., storage of furniture, supplies, etc.)and make simple reports; create requisitions for supplies andequipment; oversee the coordination of supply orders underprocesses for Purchasing to get product and/or equipment in atimely manner, take corrective action to resolve maintenanceproblems;
  • Leading of assigned staff includes assisting in interviewingand assist making recommendations for hire, scheduling andassignment of shifts; assist with conducting performanceevaluations and counseling on performance, taking or recommendingcorrective actions as needed, making recommendations for civilservice status, etc.;
  • Improve work methods, knowledge of equipment, supplies andsafety through participation in meetings and training sessions withsupervisors;
  • Conduct, present and attend monthly department meetings withcustodial staff and bring forward the review of each recommendationin the minutes and what was learned, any findings, conclusions andsuggestions;
  • Assist with set-up and tear-down of equipment needed for CBCevents, meetings, classrooms and trainings, includingwhiteboards/erasers, furnishings, folding chairs, and tables;assist with office moves and other revisions to work areas (e.g.,moving workstations, furniture, supplies. etc.);
  • Respond to call-ins by prioritizing assignments, office movesunder work orders for emergencies, particularly on Monday mornings;assist with and assign snow removal of common and other campusareas;
  • Assume additional responsibilities as assigned in supervisor'sabsence; and
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Terms of Employment

This position is a full-time overtime eligible, classified staffposition. The typical work hours for this position are Mondaythrough Thursday from 9:45 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. and Friday 6:00 p.m.to 11:00 p.m.; or Monday through Thursday 8:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.;however, must be available to work a flexible schedule when priornotice is given by the College. This position is availableimmediately.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this position, the employee isfrequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate,reach, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility,including frequent traveling between buildings on campus anddriving employer vehicles off and around campus. Duties involvephysical strength, agility and endurance to bend/reach, lift, pullor push objects weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis, 80pounds with help from others or by mechanical means, and climb aladder and work from heights no more than 80 feet off the ground.Manual dexterity and coordination are required while operatingequipment such as standard office equipment and custodialequipment.

Working Conditions

Work environment is performed in multiple locations such as atypical office environment, field and indoor/outdoor settings thatincludes some exposure to hazards or physical risks that requirefollowing safety and driving requirements. There may be exposure tochemical hazards requiring the use of rubber safety gloves andsafety glasses as provided. Interruptions occur on a regular basis.There can be exposure to adverse weather conditions and unusualelements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust and/or unevensurfaces, while performing the duties of this position.
