Job Summary

Custodial Workers are assigned responsibilities involving the care and cleaning of residential halls. This is an entry level where employees are assigned routine work involving sweeping, mopping, dusting, disposing of trash, and other simple cleaning duties.

  • Performs a variety of custodial tasks performed during the day as well as at night, depending on shift. Provides custodial service and upkeep to residence hall areas inside and outside of dormitories on the Modesto Maidique campus. Work is performed in accordance with established procedures, but specific instruction may be given in unusual situations. Supervision received is general, particularly on late shifts, and work is subject to inspection by a supervisor for maintenance of established standards of cleanliness and compliance with instructions.
  • Sweeps, mops, waxes and polishes floors and staircases; Removes chewing gum from surfaces. Cleans and maintains residence hall sidewalks and outside common areas. Pick up litter, empty bottles, tree and shrub trimmings, and sweep residence hall perimeter.
  • Cleans restrooms and replenishes supplies. Empties all wastebaskets/trash containers within the residence halls and replaces with nylon liners.
  • Vacuums and cleans carpets and floor mats; removes stains. Cleans windows, glass doors, and frames. Washes walls, woodwork, venetian blinds/window treatments. Dust informational/newspaper display racks.
  • Cleans desks, dormitories, lounges, and corridor furniture. Moves furniture as required.
  • Cleans guest apartments and makes beds.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
  • Performs essential duties during any emergencies, such as hurricanes, storms and/or any other University emergency closing. Is expected to be available to report to work as needed during University emergency closings with appropriate notification by department administrator.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of the ninth (9th) grade.
Desired Qualifications
  • 6 months to 2 years of experience in janitorial or custodial work or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
