Job summary

U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT is hiring a Cook-05 INT to prepare and cook a variety of food items and maintain kitchen safety and cleanliness. The role uses diverse cooking methods and requires bar/food service support as needed.

The position operates on an intermittent schedule (0–19 hours/week) and pays $20.83 per hour. Applicants will work at the MWR Academy Officer’s Club and contribute to daily food service operations.

Qualifications

• Experience in methods and procedures relating to food preparation, presentation, reading and following recipes.
• Experience following oral and written instructions and performing simple arithmetic.
• Must be physically able to frequently lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds.
• Must be able to continuously stand, walk, stoop, reach, push, pull and bend for long periods of time.

Responsibilities

• Prepares and cooks a variety of menu items such as hamburgers, grilled sandwiches, eggs, quick meals, cold sandwiches and salads.
• Operates kitchen equipment which utilizes gas, electricity, steam, or microwave heat sources.
• Grills or fries steaks, chops, poultry, pancakes, bacon, sausage, etc., by watching while the items are cooking, turning as required and removing when done.
• Maintains rotation of food inventories to prevent spoilage and ensures proper temperatures for safety.
• Cleans and maintains equipment and work areas; follows safety procedures; performs other cleaning tasks as scheduled.
• May carry out bar-related duties such as filling ice bins, stocking beer, setting up service bars.
• Other duties as assigned.
