Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent certification.
• Between one and three years of experience in Solid Waste Removal.
• Hazardous Material Certification required after 6 months of employment.
• Familiarity with plastics HDPE #1/#2, PET plastic, shrink wraps and Styrofoam.
• Experience supervising labor crews and operating equipment.
• Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in Solid Waste Removal.
• Knowledge of safety hazards and equipment.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to multitask with strong organizational skills.
• Valid, current driver’s license.

Title: Crew Leader - Sanitation

Status: Onsite, Full-Time

Department: Sanitation

JOB OVERVIEW:

The purpose of this position is to employ waste control and disposal methods such as source reduction, recycling, re-use, and landfilling to create a positive environmental impact and effectively protect the health and safety of City residents. Work consists of supervising and assisting a crew in completing assigned projects under the direction of the Sanitation Superintendent, who issues work orders and inspects work in progress and upon completion for adherence to orders and accepted standards of workmanship. Crew Leaders are expected, however, to complete routine assignments without detailed supervision.

Essential functions:

The following duties are normal for this position, but not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required as assigned.

• Lead and support a crew in solid waste removal, scheduling, training, and mentoring
• Operate and oversee equipment including trucks, heavy machinery, and hand tools to get the job done safely and efficiently
• Plan and organize daily work, making sure crews, equipment, and materials are ready to go
• Assign jobs and manage schedules, ensuring work and assignments are complete, on time, and to the City’s standards
• Inspect completed work and step in to resolve issues or resident concerns; handle

investigations

• Promotes a strong safety culture by investigating incidents, enforcing standards, and providing training when needed
• Manages daily operations, including end-of-day check-ins, tracking work completed, and reporting any issues
• Handles basic paperwork and tracking, including materials, permits, and equipment use; Conducts Root Cause Investigations for all injuries and incidents, ensuring consistent discipline and retraining.
• Jumps in and work alongside the crew when needed to keep projects moving
• Performs other duties as required or assigned

Desired Knowledge, SKILLS, and Abilities AND QUALIFICATIONS

• High School diploma or equivalent certification
• Between one and three years of experience working in Solid Waste Removal
• Hazardous Material Certification is required after 6 months of employment
• Familiarity with plastics HDPE #1/#2, PET plastic, shrink wraps, various grades of Styrofoam, and acceptable waste at different facilities
• Experience in the supervision of labor crews and the use of equipment
• Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in Solid Waste Removal
• Knowledge of the hazards and safety equipment of the work
• Written and oral communication skills
• Ability to multitask with excellent organization skills
• Valid, current driver’s license required

Overall Physical Strength Demands:

This position involves working outside of a typical office setting, typically outside in any weather environment.

• Travel between locations may be required.
