Job summary

Town of Cary is looking for a Municipal Solid Waste Crew Leader to supervise a collection crew and operate a packer truck on solid waste, yard waste, and recycling routes. The role requires strong leadership, routing efficiency, and safety practices on a daily basis.

Ideal candidates will have experience with rear-loading packer systems, a valid Class B license, and the ability to train new staff while maintaining calm, productive crews in all weather conditions.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or equivalent with experience operating motorized equipment.
• Valid Class B commercial driver's license or willingness to obtain.
• Experience driving a rear-loading packer truck preferred.

Responsibilities

• Drives trucks on prescribed routes to collect yard waste, refuse, or recyclables and transports to disposal areas.
• Operates the packer to pack and dump refuse.
• Oversees the work of the assigned crew on the collection route.
• Balances collection speed with load; monitors crew efficiency and safety.
• Instructs new employees in proper collection methods to ensure efficiency and safety.
• Performs pre- and post-trip inspections of the truck.
• Provides input for performance reviews of subordinates.
• Answers questions from residents regarding department procedures.
• Participates in equipment cleaning, care, and maintenance.
• Performs other job-related duties as required.

Municipal Solid Waste Crew Leader

The Municipal Solid Waste Crew Leader is responsible for the operation of a packer truck and the leading of a crew engaged in the collection of recycling, solid waste and/or yard waste. This position is a key member of the Public Works Leaf Collection & Adverse Weather Response teams. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Solid Waste Operations Coordinator.

Responsibilities

• Drives trucks over prescribed routes to collect yard waste, refuse, or recyclables and transport items to prescribed disposal areas
• Operates the packer to pack and dump refuse
• Oversees the work of assigned crew while on collection route
• Works with crew throughout the route to balance collection speed and load; observes workers in the operation of packing equipment
• Instructs new employees in proper collection methods to assure efficiency, neatness, and safety
• Perform pre and post trip inspection of truck
• Provides input for performance reviews of subordinates
• Answers questions from citizens regarding department procedures
• Participates in the cleaning, care and maintenance of equipment
• Performs other job-related duties as required

General Knowledge and Skills

• General knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and rear load and equipment
• Thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation
• General knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of municipal solid waste equipment
• Skill and care in the operation of the equipment
• Ability to perform continuous heavy manual work at a steady pace and under various weather conditions

Physical Requirements

Work in this class is medium to heavy work and may require exposure to various environmental conditions such as heat, cold, rain, and unpleasant surroundings. An employee must have the physical agility to move about freely including stooping to pick up trash and climbing in and out of the truck. Heavy lifting may be required. Visual acuity is necessary in order to operate the equipment. An employee must also be able to hear to monitor the operation of the vehicle and talk in order to be able to communicate with employees on the crew.

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in operation of motorized equipment.

Requires possession of a valid class "B" commercial driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Requirements

Experience driving a rear loading packer truck in the collection of refuse, yard waste, and/or recyclable materials.

Special Requirements

Requires National Incident Management System (NIMS) training (provided).

Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
