Job summary

  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in sanitation operations, including both rear and sideload vehicles and route development.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory or leadership responsibility
  • Valid Class B CDL with air brake endorsement is required. Class A CDL and tanker endorsement are preferred.
  • Experience as a CDL trainer is preferred.

Job description

Under Public Works direction, the Sanitation Supervisor directs, supervises, and coordinates the activities, operations, and maintenance of the sanitation division of the Public Works department, in addition to performing duties related to those operations.

Essential Functions
  • Supervises the Sanitation staff to ensure proper operations through consistent communication and follow up.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships and communicates operational needs effectively with leadership, employees, maintenance staff, transfer station and the public
  • Manages Sanitation division training for employees related to safety requirements, equipment maintenance and route operations.
  • Prepares budget recommendations, monitors approved expenditures, and manages purchasing, supplies, inventory, contracts, and other resources.
  • Manages customer service expectations for the division and ensures timely and professional
  • Assumes other duties as directed by Department or City leadership.
Additional Duties/Responsibilities/Skills
  • Possesses a working knowledge of the equipment, materials and supplies used in sanitation operations and the ability to perform minor repairs.
  • Works independently to direct and complete daily activities and completes projects as assigned.
  • Prepares, organizes, and maintains technical systems through analysis, problem solving, and required mathematical computations and communicates technical information as needed.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED).
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in sanitation operations, including both rear and sideload vehicles and route development.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory or leadership responsibility
  • Valid Class B CDL with air brake endorsement is required. Class A CDL and tanker endorsement are preferred.
  • Experience as a CDL trainer is preferred.Any equivalent combination of related education and experience may be considered as meeting the minimum qualifications of the position.

  • Work is frequently performed in outside weather conditions to include frequent exposure to heat and cold, wet and/or humid conditions.
  • Work is frequently performed near moving mechanical parts and heavy traffic areas.

  • Work is performed in a frequently loud environment.
  • Duties regularly include:
    1. Ability to walk or stand for extended periods of time, with occasional need to climb, balance, stoop, crouch, kneel, and/or crawl.
    2. Ability to frequently lift or move up to 50 lbs. and occasionally up to 100 lbs.
    3. Ability to use hands and fingers to handle, feel, and operate objects, tools, and controls and reach with arms and hands.
    4. Ability to use close vision, distance, vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
