Qualifications

• Three years of experience in a correctional, behavioral, or penal institution with responsibility for security, custody, rehabilitation, or classification of offenders, or in law enforcement or security plus one of the following:
• Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR
• One year of experience in any field; OR
• Six months of law enforcement experience as a POST certified peace officer.

Responsibilities

• Supervise, direct, and evaluate the performance of assigned correctional officers, sergeants, and lieutenants to ensure effective security operations.
• Oversee daily institutional security functions, including housing unit operations, perimeter security, inmate movement, count procedures, and emergency response readiness.
• Ensure compliance with departmental policies, post orders, security protocols, and applicable state and federal regulations.
• Conduct regular inspections of housing units, work sites, and security posts to identify safety or compliance issues and implement corrective actions.
• Coordinate and oversee staff scheduling, post assignments, and leave management to maintain adequate security coverage throughout the facility.
• Participate in incident management by responding to emergencies, directing staff during critical events, and completing required reports and documentation.
• Assist with investigations of inmate misconduct, staff performance concerns, and security breaches, ensuring accurate reporting and follow-up.
• Review and prepare administrative reports, logs, and assessments related to staffing, security incidents, and operational activities.
• Mentor and train correctional staff, reinforcing standards of professionalism, ethical conduct, and proper security procedures.
• Collaborate with other departments—including Programs, Classification, and Medical—to maintain coordinated operations and promote institutional safety.
• Ensure compliance with PREA standards through supervision, reporting, and staff accountability.
• Support Warden and executive staff in implementing institutional goals, strategic initiatives, and operational improvements.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support the safe, secure, and efficient operation of Dixon Correctional Institute.
