Job summary

Dixon Correctional Institute in Jackson, LA, part of the Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections, is seeking an experienced Corrections Captain to lead security operations and supervise staff. • Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR
• One year of experience in any field; OR
• Six months of law enforcement experience as a POST certified peace officer.

Responsibilities

• Supervise, direct, and evaluate the performance of assigned correctional officers, sergeants, and lieutenants to ensure effective security operations.
• Oversee daily institutional security functions, including housing unit operations, perimeter security, inmate movement, count procedures, and emergency response readiness.
• Ensure compliance with departmental policies, post orders, security protocols, and applicable state and federal regulations.
• Conduct regular inspections of housing units, work sites, and security posts to identify safety or compliance issues and implement corrective actions.
• Coordinate and oversee staff scheduling, post assignments, and leave management to maintain adequate security coverage throughout the facility.
• Participate in incident management by responding to emergencies, directing staff during critical events, and completing required reports and documentation.
• Assist with investigations of inmate misconduct, staff performance concerns, and security breaches, ensuring accurate reporting and follow-up.
• Review and prepare administrative reports, logs, and assessments related to staffing, security incidents, and operational activities.
• Mentor and train correctional staff, reinforcing standards of professionalism, ethical conduct, and proper security procedures.
• Collaborate with other departments—including Programs, Classification, and Medical—to maintain coordinated operations and promote institutional safety.
• Ensure compliance with PREA standards through supervision, reporting, and staff accountability.
• Support Warden and executive staff in implementing institutional goals, strategic initiatives, and operational improvements.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support the safe, secure, and efficient operation of Dixon Correctional Institute.

Dixon Correctional Institute is seeking an experienced and dedicated Corrections Captain to provide leadership, direction, and oversight within a secure correctional environment. The Corrections Captain is responsible for supervising assigned correctional staff, coordinating daily security operations, enforcing institutional policies, and ensuring compliance with departmental standards. Three years of experience in a correctional, behavioral, or penal institution with responsibility for the security, custody, rehabilitation, or classification of offenders, or in law enforcement or security plus one of the following:

One year of this experience must have been in a position equivalent in scope of responsibility or complexity of work performed to a Corrections Lieutenant in the State service.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse; engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Possession of a current driver's license.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: PROBATION, or PROMOTION OF A PERMANENT, CLASSIFIED LOUISIANA STATE EMPLOYEE

• Current permanent status classified LA State employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if accepted.
• An employee selected for a promotion may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted.
• This posting may also be used to fill a vacancy as a temporary job appointment. If filled as a temporary job appointment, should a permanent position become available, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment.

Compensation: This position has a Special Entrance Rate (SER) of $29.60 per hour.

This position also offers premium pay: A rate between $.50 and $1.00 an hour for each regular hour worked, based on years of service with DOC, in addition to regular pay.
