Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections seeks a shift supervisor to plan, coordinate, and direct security staff and oversee inmate custody in a medium/maximum security facility.

You will ensure building and property security, perform routine unit patrols, assist with inmate counts, and investigate incidents, disputes, and policy violations. Successful candidates must complete SCDC Basic Training within eight weeks of hire.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma and relevant experience.
• A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.
• Three years' experience in correctional, security, military, or police work with one year of supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody and control of inmates in a medium/maximum security facility.
• Assumes primary responsibility for security for all buildings and public property.
• Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmate counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
