Qualifications

• Must complete eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.
• A high school diploma and relevant experience; a bachelor’s degree may substitute for the required experience.
• SCDC minimum requirements include 18 months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work; a criminal justice degree may substitute for half of the required experience; must be certified by the SC Department of Corrections Training Academy and complete the Basic Supervisory Course within six months.

Responsibilities

• Supervise subordinate security assigned to housing units and control inmates.
• Conduct routine inspections of living areas for security, safety, and sanitation standards.
• Investigate alleged misconduct by inmates or personnel.
• Assist in conducting formal and informal counts.
• Supervise job performance, conduct, and appearance of security staff; prepare evaluations.
• Counsel, recommend disciplinary actions, and train staff to performance standards.
• Prepare required reports.
