Job summary

Sterling Healthcare Management in Evansville, IN seeks a skilled Cook to prepare nutritious meals for residents in a structured kitchen. You will follow standardized recipes and therapeutic diets while ensuring meals residents look forward to every day.

You will prepare all meals, monitor temperatures per HACCP, and maintain a clean kitchen. ServSafe required within 30 days; prior healthcare cooking experience preferred.

Qualifications

  • Healthcare or institutional cooking experience preferred.
  • ServSafe certification required or within 30 days of hire.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic diets and texture modifications preferred.
  • Ability to follow standardized recipes and production schedules.
  • Stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook all meals per the posted menu.
  • Follow therapeutic diet orders (low sodium, diabetic, renal).
  • Prepare texture-modified foods (minced, pureed, IDDSI).
  • Monitor food temperatures at critical control points per HACCP.
  • Portion and assemble resident trays per diet cards and tray tickets.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen.
  • Operate ovens, steamers, and slicers safely.
  • Rotate and store inventory using FIFO.
  • Communicate menu changes to the dietary team promptly.

What You'll Do
  • Prepare and cook all meals including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks per the posted menu
  • Follow therapeutic diet orders including low sodium, diabetic, renal, and texture-modified diets
  • Prepare texture-modified foods including minced, pureed, and IDDSI-compliant items
  • Monitor and record food temperatures at all critical control points per HACCP guidelines
  • Portion and assemble resident trays accurately per diet cards and tray tickets
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen throughout the shift
  • Operate commercial kitchen equipment safely including ovens, steamers, and slicers
  • Rotate and store food inventory using FIFO standardsComplete temperature logs, cleaning schedules, and production records
  • Communicate menu changes and substitutions to the dietary team promptly
Requirements
  • Prior cooking experience in a healthcare, institutional, or high-volume food service setting preferred
  • ServSafe Food Handler Certification required or must obtain within 30 days of hire
  • Knowledge of therapeutic diets and texture modifications preferred — will train
  • Ability to follow standardized recipes and production schedules
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work well under the time pressure of scheduled meal service
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays
