Job summary

StealthCo, an early-stage title insurance platform backed by 25madison, seeks a Controller to build the finance and accounting infrastructure from the ground up. Reporting to the CEO, this role will establish processes, controls, and reporting in a fast-paced startup environment.

The Controller will oversee financial reporting, payroll, AP/AR, cash management, and financial modeling as the company scales toward future CFO leadership.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required or equivalent experience.
• CPA certification strongly preferred.
• Strong technical accounting knowledge including revenue recognition and internal controls.

Responsibilities

• Build and lead the company’s accounting and finance infrastructure during StealthCo’s early growth phase.
• Establish the company’s financial reporting framework, including monthly close processes and management reporting.
• Implement and manage the company’s accounting system and chart of accounts design.
• Develop and document accounting policies, controls, and scalable financial processes.
• Oversee day-to-day accounting operations including AP/AR, payroll, GL, and bank reconciliations.
• Support acquisition accounting and integration activities as the company scales.
• Develop financial models and forecasts to support planning and growth initiatives.
• Provide financial insights to CEO and leadership for strategic decisions.

The Opportunity

StealthCo is seeking a Controller to serve as the organization’s senior finance leader during its early growth phase. Reporting directly to the CEO, this individual will be responsible for building the company’s finance and accounting infrastructure from the ground up while supporting rapid operational expansion.

This role represents a unique opportunity to join a high-growth, private equity-backed platform at the earliest stages of its development. The Controller will play a critical role in establishing financial processes, implementing systems and controls, and ensuring the company has the financial visibility required to scale responsibly.

The Controller will initially oversee all core accounting and finance functions, including financial reporting, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, cash management, and financial modeling. As the organization grows, this individual will have the opportunity to build and lead a broader finance team and will ultimately work alongside a future CFO as the company continues to scale.

The ideal candidate will combine strong technical accounting expertise with a highly entrepreneurial mindset. This individual must be comfortable operating in a fast-paced startup environment with limited infrastructure, while also building processes that will support a sophisticated, institutional-grade finance function as the business grows.

This is a highly visible role with direct interaction with the executive team, private equity sponsors, and established board members.

Responsibilities

• Build and lead the company’s accounting and finance infrastructure during StealthCo’s early growth phase.


• Establish the company’s financial reporting framework, including monthly close processes, financial statements, and management reporting.


• Implement and manage the company’s accounting system, including chart of accounts design and financial reporting structure.


• Develop and document accounting policies, internal controls, and financial processes to support a scalable finance organization.


• Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger management, and bank reconciliations.


• Dotted-line manage branch-level accounting teams and individuals to ensure compliance with company procedures and timely reporting


• Support acquisition accounting and integration activities as the company expands through M&A.


• Develop financial models and forecasts to support operational planning and growth initiatives.


• Partner closely with the CEO and leadership team to provide financial insights that support strategic decision-making.


• Manage vendor relationships and oversee financial compliance, including coordination with auditors, tax advisors, and external partners.


• Assist in evaluating and implementing future financial systems as the company scales beyond its initial accounting platform.


• Recruit and develop additional finance and accounting personnel as the organization grows.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA strongly preferred.


• ~6-10 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including experience as a Controller, Accounting Manager, or similar leadership role.


• Prior experience in insurance and/or roll-up model. Experience within title insurance is a plus.


• Strong technical accounting expertise, including revenue recognition, financial reporting, and internal controls.


• Experience building accounting infrastructure or financial processes in a scaling organization.


• Experience managing multiple, distinct entities within a larger financial organization.


• Familiarity with accounting systems such as QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar platforms.


• Exposure to acquisition accounting or transaction-related accounting is a plus.


• Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment with limited existing infrastructure.


• Strong communication skills and executive presence, with the ability to interact directly with leadership, investors, and board members.
