Job description

Our client, a mission-driven theatre company, is seeking an experienced Controller for an exciting role in New York City. This is a hybrid role in Manhattan, working 3 days onsite and 2 days remote. Some relocation support may be available for non-local candidates.

Overview:

Play a key role in maintaining the financial health, transparency, and accountability of the organization. Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Controller will oversee all aspects of financial reporting, audit coordination, compliance, and internal controls.

The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader and mentor with strong technical expertise, a passion for nonprofit financial management, and a genuine appreciation for the arts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and maintain accurate and timely financial records for the organization and its wholly owned subsidiary in accordance with GAAP, ensuring integrity, compliance, and sound internal controls.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to external auditors and lead audit processes.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, including preparation and filing of Form 990.
  • Manage investment accounting and ensure accurate recording and reconciliation of all investment activity.
  • Partner with the Associate Director of Finance to manage the monthly close process.
  • Work effectively with Development to ensure common understanding of differences in treatment of certain revenue items.
  • Support grant reporting and other contractual financial reports to external stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices to enhance efficiency and service.
  • Develop, implement, and document policies and procedures to strengthen internal controls and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Lead the transition of current accounting software to the cloud-based version; leverage new system capabilities to optimize reporting capabilities and workflow efficiencies.
  • Supervise, mentor, and support accounting staff (2 direct reports); collaborate closely with the broader finance team.
  • Perform special projects and financial analysis as assigned by the Director of Finance.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of accounting or finance experience, with at least 3 years in a nonprofit environment.
  • CPA or equivalent credentials are highly preferred.
  • Understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Proficiency in financial software; experience with Financial Edge, QuickBooks, and Tessitura is a plus.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and analytical thinking.
  • A team player that wants to make an impact.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, grounded in emotional intelligence and integrity, with a strong focus on collaboration and constructive engagement across all levels of the organization.
  • A genuine interest in and knowledge of the performing arts or cultural organizations.

This is a full-time position with a strong benefits package. The salary range is $150,000- $165,000 annually depending on the combination of relevant experience, education, certifications, and other criteria.
