Job summary

Corps Team is assisting a museum and research library in Midtown Manhattan, NY, to fill an Assistant Controller position. This direct-hire role reports to the Controller and focuses on ensuring the integrity of financial operations in a nonprofit fund accounting environment.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience with month-end closes, audits, and endowment accounting, and can improve internal controls while leveraging new technology. Collaboration with cross-department teams is essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting required.
  • Eight years of experience in an endowment-supported nonprofit organization required.
  • Hands-on experience with investment journal entries, audits, and fund accounting.
  • Experience with IRS Form 990, 1099, 1042, and NY State Sales tax a plus.

Responsibilities

Job description

Our client, a museum and research library, is seeking an Assistant Controller for a direct hire role in midtown New York City.

Reporting to the Controller, the position will play a critical role in the integrity and accuracy of financial operations.

This position is responsible for day-to-day, monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting functions in a non-profit fund accounting environment, with particular emphasis on overseeing the operating accounts.

Responsibilities include preparing general ledger entries, actively participating in the annual audit process, assisting with the monthly closing schedule, and, where possible, working with the Controller in maintaining and reporting on restricted funds, endowment, and investment balances.

This position works extensively with other members of the Finance team and collaboratively with staff from a wide range of other departments.

An ideal candidate will have experience and passion for process improvement, implementing and leveraging new technology, and improving internal controls.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit GAAP.
  • Experience with monthly close and financial reporting.
  • Experience supporting nonprofit audits.
  • Ability to supervise staff while remaining hands-on in accounting work.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
  • Skill in financial analysis and reporting.
  • Strong computer skills, including advanced skills with Microsoft Office Excel.
  • Experience with accounting software, MIP Abila preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others in both written and verbal form.
  • Must be highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to allocate time efficiently.
  • Advanced report writing a plus.
  • Collegial approach to work with an interest in the organization’s mission and programming.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in accounting.
  • A minimum of eight years of experience with increasing scope and responsibility in an endowment-supported nonprofit organization is required.
  • Hands-on experience with investment journal entries, audits, and fund accounting.
  • Experience with regulatory and government filings including IRS Form 990, 1099, 1042, and NY State Sales tax.
  • Experience in public accounting a plus.

Compensation $115,000 to $130,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
