Job summary

enVision Staffing Solutions is seeking a seasoned Controller for a nonprofit organization with a strong emphasis on construction and project accounting. You will oversee all accounting operations, close cycles, and financial reporting, while guiding budgeting and cash-flow forecasting across multiple projects.

The ideal candidate has a Bachelor’s degree, 7+ years of accounting experience (nonprofit and project-based preferred), strong GAAP knowledge, and proven leadership.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
• 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with nonprofit exposure preferred.
• Experience in construction/project accounting and grant accounting is highly desirable.
• Strong internal controls, policy development, and GAAP knowledge required.
• Experience leading teams and communicating with executives and boards.

Responsibilities

• Oversee all accounting operations: GL, AP/AR, payroll, cash management, reconciliations.
• Lead month-end and year-end close processes.
• Prepare financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and cash-flow projections.
• Oversee construction/project accounting: job costing, project budgets, expenditures, commitments.
• Monitor costs, ensure proper coding and allocation; perform variance analyses.
• Maintain internal controls and nonprofit accounting standards; manage restricted/unrestricted funds and grants.
• Assist with grant accounting, reporting, and compliance; oversee fixed assets and depreciation.
• Lead annual audit and tax preparation; develop and manage the operating budget.
• Collaborate with construction, development, operations, and executive leadership.

Job description

Our client is a well-established nonprofit organization seeking an experienced Controller to oversee the organization’s accounting and financial operations, with a strong emphasis on construction/project accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, and internal controls.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who understands both the accounting side of a nonprofit organization and the financial complexities associated with construction and development projects.

Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee all accounting operations, including GL, AP, AR, payroll, cash management, and reconciliations
• Lead the month-end and year-end close process
• Prepare accurate financial statements, management reports, budgets, forecasts, and cash-flow projections
• Oversee construction and project accounting, including job costing, project budgets, expenditures, and commitments
• Monitor construction costs and ensure expenses are properly coded and allocated
• Perform budget-to-actual and variance analysis across projects and departments
• Maintain strong internal controls and accounting policies in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
• Manage restricted and unrestricted funds, grants, and program-related financial activity
• Assist with grant accounting, reporting, and compliance requirements
• Oversee fixed assets, depreciation, accruals, prepaid expenses, and balance sheet reconciliations
• Manage cash flow and provide financial analysis to senior leadership
• Lead the annual audit and tax preparation process
• Develop and manage the annual operating budget
• Partner with construction, operations, development, and executive leadership teams
• Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting, and financial controls
• Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff
• Prepare financial reporting and presentations for executive leadership and Board-level stakeholders

Ideal Candidate

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 7+ years of progressive accounting experience
• Previous Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leadership experience
• Experience in nonprofit accounting strongly preferred
• Construction, real estate development, affordable housing, or project-based accounting experience preferred
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting
• Experience with fund accounting, grants, restricted funds, and/or donor-related accounting
• Strong understanding of job costing, project accounting, budgeting, and forecasting
• Advanced Excel and ERP/accounting system experience
• Strong leadership and team-management skills
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
• Comfortable presenting financial information to executive leadership and a Board
• Mission-driven, collaborative leader who can balance hands-on accounting with strategic financial oversight
