Our client is a well-established nonprofit organization seeking an experienced Controller to oversee the organization’s accounting and financial operations, with a strong emphasis on construction/project accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, and internal controls.
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who understands both the accounting side of a nonprofit organization and the financial complexities associated with construction and development projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee all accounting operations, including GL, AP, AR, payroll, cash management, and reconciliations
- Lead the month-end and year-end close process
- Prepare accurate financial statements, management reports, budgets, forecasts, and cash-flow projections
- Oversee construction and project accounting, including job costing, project budgets, expenditures, and commitments
- Monitor construction costs and ensure expenses are properly coded and allocated
- Perform budget-to-actual and variance analysis across projects and departments
- Maintain strong internal controls and accounting policies in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
- Manage restricted and unrestricted funds, grants, and program-related financial activity
- Assist with grant accounting, reporting, and compliance requirements
- Oversee fixed assets, depreciation, accruals, prepaid expenses, and balance sheet reconciliations
- Manage cash flow and provide financial analysis to senior leadership
- Lead the annual audit and tax preparation process
- Develop and manage the annual operating budget
- Partner with construction, operations, development, and executive leadership teams
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting, and financial controls
- Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff
- Prepare financial reporting and presentations for executive leadership and Board-level stakeholders
Ideal Candidate
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Previous Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leadership experience
- Experience in nonprofit accounting strongly preferred
- Construction, real estate development, affordable housing, or project-based accounting experience preferred
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting
- Experience with fund accounting, grants, restricted funds, and/or donor-related accounting
- Strong understanding of job costing, project accounting, budgeting, and forecasting
- Advanced Excel and ERP/accounting system experience
- Strong leadership and team-management skills
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Comfortable presenting financial information to executive leadership and a Board
- Mission-driven, collaborative leader who can balance hands-on accounting with strategic financial oversight
