  • Experience with nonprofit GAAP; CPA is a plus.

Job Details

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller is responsible for the day-to-day finance and accounting operations of a mission-driven nonprofit organization, including bookkeeping, accounts payable, accounts receivable, banking, grant accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls. This hands-on role ensures accurate and timely financial information for leadership, the Board of Directors, funding partners, and other stakeholders. The Controller works collaboratively across the organization and serves as a key partner to the CFO in budgeting, audit preparation, compliance, and continuous process improvement.

Job Duties
Accounting & Reporting
  • Prepare, analyze, and issue financial statements and related reports for leadership, the Board of Directors, funding partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Manage grant accounting, including tracking restricted funds, recording grant receivables, and assisting with grant budgets and reimbursement requests.
  • Prepare, track, and reconcile ledgers and budgets across multiple programs and grants.
  • Collect, analyze, and consolidate financial data to support accurate reporting and informed decision-making.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline financial processes while maintaining strong internal controls.
  • Manage day-to-day accounting activities in partnership with the CFO, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, receipts, deposits, purchase orders, invoices, refunds, and general bookkeeping.
  • Coordinate and manage procurement activities.
  • Oversee banking activities, including deposits, account management, and reconciliations.
  • Support the CFO in developing annual budgets and forecasts in collaboration with departmental teams.
  • Prepare recurring invoices in coordination with appropriate internal teams.
  • Review and approve invoices submitted through the organization’s payment processing platform.
Financial Compliance
  • Coordinate the annual financial statement audit or financial review process with the CFO and external advisors.
  • Design, document, and maintain effective internal controls and accounting procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable financial regulations, grant requirements, and internal policies.
  • Compile financial information required for organizational tax filings, including Forms 990 and 1099.
Payroll, Banking & Procurement
  • Review and process employee expense reports.
  • Coordinate and manage procurement activities and related financial processes.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field with 3-5 years of relevant experience. Nonprofit accounting experience and knowledge of nonprofit GAAP are preferred; CPA designation is a plus.
  • Strong accounting knowledge across payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, and general ledger accounting.
  • Experience with grant accounting, government grant compliance, and federal financial regulations, including 2 CFR 200, preferred.
  • High level of ethics, integrity, accountability, and attention to detail.
  • Strong collaboration, organizational, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and experience with accounting, payment processing, and related financial systems.
  • Self-starter who can thrive in a small, dynamic environment, work independently, prioritize competing responsibilities, and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Interest in supporting entrepreneurship, innovation, startups, and broader economic development initiatives.
