Job summary

Trust & Will, a remote-first estate planning company headquartered in San Diego, CA, seeks a seasoned Controller to lead the accounting function across the company and its subsidiaries. You will own month-end closes, tax compliance, and the AP/AR cycle while building scalable controls and automation into our processes.

You will drive financial reporting quality, manage a growing team, and partner with FP&A on cost analysis and strategic planning in a fast-paced, VC-backed environment.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 10 years of accounting experience, with at least 4-5 years in a Controller or similar leadership role within a high-growth environment.
• CPA certification is preferred.
• Hands-on experience applying AI or automation to accounting workflows.
• Experience designing internal controls for automated or AI-assisted processes.
• Proficiency in Google Sheets & Excel.
• Familiarity with financial regulations and reporting requirements for startups and IPO preparation.
• Proven experience managing and developing direct reports.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong analytical skills with a strategic mindset.

Responsibilities

• Own accounting at Trust & Will and its subsidiaries, including month-end close, tax compliance, and AP/AR.
• Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and enable scaling.
• Lead audits and reconciliations to ensure accuracy.
• Manage and optimize the accounting tech stack; collaborate with FP&A to keep systems integrated.
• Partner with CFO on financial strategy and cost analysis.
• Oversee vendor relationships and ensure compliance with company policies.
