The Chittenden Solid Waste District (CSWD) is a Vermont municipal entity established to carry out state-mandated solid waste management policies for Chittenden County. Role Description

The Controller is a full-time, on-site position based in Williston, VT, responsible for overseeing the District's financial operations and ensuring sound fiscal management. Day-to-day responsibilities include managing the general ledger, preparing and reviewing financial statements, supervising accounts payable and receivable, and overseeing payroll processing. The role also involves coordinating budgeting and forecasting, monitoring cash flow, and supporting the annual audit and regulatory reporting. The Controller will develop and maintain internal controls, refine financial policies and procedures, and provide financial analysis to support strategic decision-making. This position collaborates closely with leadership, program managers, and external partners to align financial practices with CSWD's mission and long-term goals.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience in accounting and financial reporting, including general ledger management, month-end close, and financial statement preparation.
• Proficiency with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis to support operational and strategic planning.
• Strong knowledge of internal controls, audit processes, compliance, and best practices in public or nonprofit financial management.
• Comfort with accounting software, spreadsheets, and financial systems; ability to improve and streamline financial workflows.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
• Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field; CPA, CMA, or comparable credential is preferred.
• Prior experience in municipal, governmental, or nonprofit finance is highly beneficial; familiarity with Vermont public sector regulations is a plus.
