Job Description
As a Controller at Promentrs, you are the senior financial leader for our clients. You will own the accounting function, set the standard for financial integrity, and serve as a true business partner to C-suite executives and Finance Directors. You will be brought in for purposeful, high-impact engagements, not routine maintenance work. Each project is an opportunity to step into a new environment, solve complex problems, and leave the organization materially stronger than you found it.
What You\'ll Do
Financial Close & Reporting
- Serve as the senior accounting leader for the client, owning theintegrity of all financial reporting and close processes
- Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close cycle, ensuringaccuracy, timeliness, and full compliance with U.S. GAAP
- Prepare and review financial statements, management reporting packages, and board-level financial presentations
- Lead variance analysis, identifying trends, issues, and opportunities and communicating findings clearly to senior leadership
- Manage and review general ledger activity, account reconciliations, and trial balance with a high standard of accuracy
Strategic Business Partnership
- Function as a trusted advisor to the CFO, CEO, and other key business leaders, providing financial insights that support strategic decision-making
- Partner across departments including operations, FP&A, legal, and HR to align financial processes with broader business objectives
- Support special projects including ERP implementations and system migrations, M&A due diligence and integration, IPO readiness and capital markets preparation, and restructuring or carve-out support
Controls, Compliance & Process Improvements
- Design, implement, and maintain a strong internal control environment that limits business risk and exposure
- Develop, document, and enforce accounting policies and procedures across the organization
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and accounting standards, including ASC 606 (revenue recognition), ASC 842(leases), and other relevant pronouncements
- Coordinate with external auditors, manage audit readiness, and support SEC reporting where applicable
Team Leadership & Mentorship
- Lead, coach, and develop accounting staff at the client site, setting clear objectives and fostering a high-performance culture
- Embrace a mentorship mindset by sharing knowledge, offering guidance, and investing in the growth of junior team members; at Promentrs, developing others is just as important as delivering results
- Drive process improvement initiatives through coaching, training, and clear ownership of change management
What You Bring
- Bachelor\'s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA license strongly preferred)
- Big 4 public accounting experience is highly preferred
- 10 or more years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3-5 years in a controller or senior accounting leadership role
- Deep expertise in U.S. GAAP; SEC reporting experience is a strong plus
- Proven track record of owning the full-cycle close, financial reporting, and internal controls in complex or fast-moving environments
- Experience with large ERP systems (NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Workday, or similar); ERP implementation experience is a plus
- Strong knowledge of technical accounting standards including ASC606, ASC 842, and purchase accounting
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills; you canearn trust quickly at all organizational levels and distill complex financialmatters into clear, actionable language
- Highly adaptable, self-directed, and effective in ambiguous orrapidly changing environments
- Prior experience in public accounting, consulting, or multi-client professional services is strongly preferred
- Entrepreneurial mindset; you operate with integrity, take initiative, and lead without waiting to be told what to do
AI (Artificial Intelligence)
- Demonstrated proficiency with AI tools is required, including active use of Claude Cowork; candidates should be comfortable leveraging AI to streamline workflows, automate routine tasks, analyze financial data, and enhance productivity across accounting and finance functions.

Engagement Terms
This position is structured as an independent contractor (1099) arrangement. Compensation is project- or hourly-based and will be discussed during the interview process based on experience, availability, and engagement scope. Conversion to a full-time employee role is available and actively encouraged for high-performing professionals.
