Job description

Promentrs is a professional services firm providing high-caliber accounting and finance expertise to businesses across industries. We embed experienced professionals directly with our clients, giving them the senior-level talent they need, exactly when they need it.Whether a client is navigating a complex close, managing rapid growth, or preparing for an audit, our people step in and deliver with confidence and precision.

We're building a team of sharp, self-motivated accounting professionals who want variety, autonomy, and real impact without the constraints of a traditional in‑house role. This engagement begins as a 1099 independent contractor arrangement, with the option to transition to full-time employment.

Each engagement is unique. Rather than the routine, maintenance-driven work that defines most internal accounting roles, you'll be brought in for purposeful, high-impact projects that challenge you to think critically and perform at your best. Because you work on one engagement at a time on a full-time basis, you're fully immersed in each client's environment, developing deep expertise across industries, systems, and business situations that most accountants never encounter in a traditional role.

Job Description

As a Controller at Promentrs, you are the senior financial leader for our clients. You will own the accounting function, set the standard for financial integrity, and serve as a true business partner to C‑suite executives and Finance Directors. You will be brought in for purposeful, high‑impact engagements, not routine maintenance work. Each project is an opportunity to step into a new environment, solve complex problems, and leave the organization materially stronger than you found it.

What You'll Do
  • Serve as the senior accounting leader for the client, owning the integrity of all financial reporting and close processes
  • Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and year‑end close cycle, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and full compliance with U.S. GAAP
  • Prepare and review financial statements, management reporting packages, and board‑level financial presentations
  • Lead variance analysis, identifying trends, issues, and opportunities and communicating findings clearly to senior leadership
  • Manage and review general ledger activity, account reconciliations, and trial balance with a high standard of accuracy
Strategic Business Partnership
  • Function as a trusted advisor to the CFO, CEO, and other key business leaders, providing financial insights that support strategic decision‑making
  • Partner across departments including operations, FP&A, legal, and HR to align financial processes with broader business objectives
  • Support special projects including ERP implementations and system migrations, M&A due diligence and integration, IPO readiness and capital markets preparation, and restructuring or carve‑out support
Controls, Compliance & Process Improvements
  • Design, implement, and maintain a strong internal control environment that limits business risk and exposure
  • Develop, document, and enforce accounting policies and procedures across the organization
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and accounting standards, including ASC 606 (revenue recognition), ASC 842(leases), and other relevant pronouncements
  • Coordinate with external auditors, manage audit readiness, and support SEC reporting where applicable
  • Lead, coach, and develop accounting staff at the client site, setting clear objectives and fostering a high‑performance culture
  • Embrace a mentorship mindset by sharing knowledge, offering guidance, and investing in the growth of junior team members; at Promentrs, developing others is just as important as delivering results
  • Drive process improvement initiatives through coaching, training, and clear ownership of change management
What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA license strongly preferred)
  • Big 4 public accounting experience is highly preferred
  • 10 or more years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3‑5 years in a controller or senior accounting leadership role
  • Deep expertise in U.S. GAAP; SEC reporting experience is a strong plus
  • Proven track record of owning the full‑cycle close, financial reporting, and internal controls in complex or fast‑moving environments
  • Experience with large ERP systems (NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Workday, or similar); ERP implementation experience is a plus
  • Strong knowledge of technical accounting standards including ASC 606, ASC 842, and purchase accounting
  • Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills; you can earn trust quickly at all organizational levels and distill complex financial matters into clear, actionable language
  • Highly adaptable, self‑directed, and effective in ambiguous or rapidly changing environments
  • Prior experience in public accounting, consulting, or multi‑client professional services is strongly preferred
  • Entrepreneurial mindset; you operate with integrity, take initiative, and lead without waiting to be told what to do
  • Demonstrated proficiency with AI tools is required, including active use of Claude Cowork; candidates should be comfortable leveraging AI to streamline workflows, automate routine tasks, analyze financial data, and enhance productivity across accounting and finance functions.
Why Promentrs
  • Variety that keeps you sharp. Work across different industries, company stages, and accounting environments; no two engagements are the same.
  • Autonomy and ownership. You're the expert. We trust you to deliver, and our clients rely on you to lead.

  • A path forward. This role begins as a 1099 independent contractor engagement. For professionals who thrive in our model, there's a genuine path to full‑time employment with Promentrs.
  • A firm that backs you. You'll work independently, but you're never isolated; Promentrs leadership supports your engagements, your growth, and your success.
Engagement Terms

This position is structured as an independent contractor (1099) arrangement. Compensation is project‑or hourly‑based and will be discussed during the interview process based on experience, availability, and engagement scope. Conversion to a full‑time employee role is available and actively encouraged for high‑performing professionals.
