Our client, a full-service real estate company, is seeking an experienced Controller to lead its corporate accounting function. This individual will be responsible for overseeing the company’s accounting operations, financial reporting, technical accounting matters, and internal controls while providing leadership and development to the accounting team.
About the Role
The ideal candidate will be a CPA with a strong foundation in corporate and technical accounting, preferably developed through a combination of public accounting and industry experience. This role requires someone who is comfortable working through complex accounting matters, improving processes and controls, and operating in a hands‑on environment within a growing and dynamic real estate organization.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the company’s corporate accounting function, including the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
- Oversee the preparation and review of consolidated financial statements and related management reporting.
- Ensure financial reporting is accurate, timely, and in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
- Research, evaluate, and document complex and technical accounting matters, including the application of new accounting guidance.
- Provide accounting oversight for complex transactions and business activities across the organization.
- Maintain and strengthen accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and financial reporting processes.
- Manage account reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and other key components of the close process.
- Partner with senior leadership and other areas of the organization on accounting implications related to business transactions, investments, contracts, and strategic initiatives.
- Coordinate the annual financial statement audit and serve as a primary point of contact for external auditors.
- Support tax, treasury, banking, and other corporate finance activities as appropriate.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, automate reporting, and increase the efficiency and scalability of the accounting organization.
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team, establishing clear responsibilities, expectations, and accountability.
- Assist with special projects, acquisitions, system implementations, and other strategic initiatives as the company continues to grow.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- CPA Required
- Approximately 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibility.
- Public accounting experience preferred, ideally with a national, regional, or Big Four accounting firm.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, technical accounting, corporate accounting, consolidations, and financial reporting.
- Demonstrated ability to research and resolve complex accounting issues.
- Experience managing and developing accounting professionals.
- Strong understanding of internal controls and accounting processes.
- Experience within real estate, investment management, development, property management, or another complex multi-entity environment is highly desirable.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate complex accounting concepts clearly to both accounting and non-accounting stakeholders.
- Comfortable operating in a privately held, entrepreneurial environment and balancing strategic leadership with hands‑on execution.
