Job description

Our client is a dynamic real estate firm with a diverse portfolio of commercial, residential, and mixed-use properties. The company is experiencing rapid growth and is seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Controller to lead accounting operations, strengthen internal controls, and drive financial accuracy to support business decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all general ledger activity, monthly/quarterly/year-end close, and preparation of financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Manage property-level and consolidated reporting, including cash flow, variance analysis, and investor reporting packages.
  • Coordinate external audits, tax compliance, and liaise with external auditors and tax advisors.
  • Lead day-to-day accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations.
  • Ensure accurate accounting for property acquisitions, dispositions, lease agreements, and development projects.
  • Implement and monitor robust internal controls across multiple entities and properties.
  • Partner with senior management to develop annual budgets and rolling forecasts.
  • Provide variance analysis and insights to support operational and strategic decisions.
  • Track capital expenditure and development project budgets, ensuring adherence to financial plans.
  • Optimize accounting systems (e.g., Yardi, MRI, RealPage, or similar) and ensure data integrity across platforms.
  • Enhance efficiency through process improvements, automation, and standardization of reporting.
  • Establish and maintain accounting policies and procedures that scale with company growth.
  • Manage, coach, and develop accounting staff to ensure accuracy, accountability, and career growth.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration and high performance within the finance function.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with at least 3–5 years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and real estate accounting practices (development, leasing, property management, REIT structures a plus).
  • Experience with real estate accounting software (e.g., Yardi, MRI, RealPage, JD Edwards, or NetSuite).
  • Demonstrated success in managing multi-entity consolidations and complex real estate transactions.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to influence at all levels.
