Job summary

S&ME is a geotechnical, civil, environmental, and construction materials engineering firm seeking a Construction Materials Engineering Technician in Indianapolis, IN. The role covers field and laboratory testing, sample collection, data interpretation, and reporting, with training and potential leadership opportunities as you gain experience.

Ideal candidates bring a high school diploma, relevant experience or an associate degree, and certifications from ACI or ICC.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in a related field preferred for advanced levels.
Associate Technician/Technician I: 0-2 years relevant experience
Technician II: 2+ years relevant experience or equivalent with an associate degree
Technician III: 3+ years relevant experience or equivalent with an associate degree
Technician IV: 5+ years relevant experience; prior leadership or mentoring experience is a plus
Active Industry certifications such as: American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician, and/or International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)
Strong English communication skills (verbal and written)
Basic math proficiency, including an understanding of measurements and units of weight
Understanding of a fluctuating schedule and interest in occasional travel
Valid U.S. driver’s license or an International Driving Permit (IDP) valid for driving in the United States, with an acceptable driving record
Ability to safely operate a company‑assigned vehicle, including trucks and SUVs
Willingness to complete a background check, driving record check and drug screen upon offer of employment

Responsibilities

Field & Lab Testing: Performing field and laboratory testing on construction materials like concrete, asphalt, soil, and aggregates.
Sample Collection & Prep: Collecting and preparing samples for analysis.
Data Interpretation & Reporting: Interpreting test results and preparing detailed reports.
Team Collaboration & Compliance: Working closely with engineers, contractors, and project managers to ensure all work meets specifications and safety guidelines.
