Job summary

The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY) seeks a dedicated Computer Associate (Operations) to join the Bureau of Enterprise Technology in full-time IT operations support. You will work across teams to maintain critical systems, monitor hardware and software, and ensure 24/7 uptime with 12.5-hour shifts.

Experience in computer operations and familiarity with Windows environments and network basics are essential; the role includes documentation, escalation, and end-user assistance for FDNY

Qualifications

  • A certificate from an accredited technical school with 675 hours in computer operations and 2 years of related experience; or
  • A bachelor's degree and 3 years of related experience; or
  • A four-year high school diploma and 4 years of related experience; or
  • A mix of education and experience meeting 1–3 above with at least 2 years of experience in computer operations.

Responsibilities

  • Interface with FDNY personnel at all levels and collaborate with BTDS teams.
  • Initiate and perform scheduled operational tasks to maintain service of FireCAD, EMSCAD, and other systems.
  • Monitor primary and backup hardware, software, peripherals, and applications; identify and resolve issues.
  • Escalate unresolved issues following escalation procedures.
  • Maintain logs and documentation of support activities, incidents, and resolutions.
  • Develop and manage operational templates and logs for data tracking and process improvement.
  • Act as the point of contact for IT-related calls, user requests, and system updates.
  • Provide hands-on support for desktop applications, printers, and end-user hardware.
  • Troubleshoot LAN/WAN issues and diagnose network communication problems.
  • Perform routine system maintenance and adhere to IT operations best practices.
  • Support systems requiring 24/7 uptime, with 12.5-hour shifts including day, night, weekends, and holidays.

Note: This position is open only to City of New York employees serving in the permanent civil service title of COMPUTER ASSOCIATE (OPERATIONS).

The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY), seeks a full‑time Computer Associate (Operations) in the Bureau of Enterprise Technology. The successful candidate will:

  • Interface with FDNY personnel at all levels and collaborate with technical teams across BTDS.
  • Initiate and perform scheduled operational tasks to maintain continuous service of FireCAD, EMSCAD, and other mission‑critical systems.
  • Monitor all primary and backup hardware, software, peripherals, and applications; promptly identify and resolve issues.
  • Escalate unresolved technical issues following established escalation procedures.
  • Maintain detailed logs and documentation of all support activities, incidents, and resolutions.
  • Develop and manage operational templates and logs for data tracking and process improvement.
  • Act as the point of contact for incoming IT‑related calls, including user requests, issue reports, and system updates.
  • Provide hands‑on support for desktop applications, local/networked printers, and end‑user hardware.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve LAN/WAN issues, including hardware and software problems.
  • Diagnose and repair network communication issues involving routers, hubs, switches, and modems.
  • Perform routine system maintenance and adhere to IT operations best practices.
  • Support systems that require 24/7 uptime, working 12.5‑hour shifts (including day, night, weekends, and holidays).

COMPUTER ASSOC (OPERATIONS) - 13621

Minimum Qualifications

1. A certificate from an accredited technical school (approximately 675 hours) with a specialization in computer operations, and two years of satisfactory full‑time computer operations experience, in a large‑scale networked, multi- tiered, or mainframe computer environment, or two years of satisfactory data communications network experience working in a mainframe or multi-tiered computer environment; or

2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and three years of satisfactory full‑time experience as described in "1" above; or

3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of satisfactory full‑time experience as described in "1" above; or

4. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to "1", "2",or "3" above. However, all candidates must have at least two years of full‑time experience as described in "1" above

Preferred Skills
  • In-depth knowledge of MS operating systems (PC & Servers).
  • Ability to navigate or learn legacy command line based Operating systems such as Open VMS
  • Proficient using Office tools which include Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, and Project
  • Knowledgeable of basic network switching and routing concepts. (Ability to troubleshoot from windows platform using tracert, ping, ipconfig, nslookup to identify and establish if an endpoint is connected on a network- Certifications considered a plus: COMPTIA A+, Network+.
