Job summary

Earth Matter NY seeks a full-time Compost Operator on Governors Island, NY. You will operate composting equipment, perform maintenance, and support safety checks. Weekend staffing is required seasonally, May–October, with occasional public visitor hours.

You will handle multiple machines (front-end loaders, trommel screen, chipper, dump truck) and contribute to ongoing processing and distribution of compost products to community partners.

Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year of compost operations experience.
• Experience with basic office software.
• Active NY driver's license; medium duty truck experience a plus.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Responsibilities

• Work in all phases of compost production; accept and preprocess feedstocks; construct, monitor and maintain compost piles; screen finished compost.
• Operate machinery to process organics in composting systems (Skid steers, front-end loaders, brush chipper, trommel screen, dump truck, Toter Tipper, grinder).
• Inspect and perform safety checks on vehicles and equipment.
• Grease, fuel, and clean vehicles, machinery and equipment.
• Perform preventative and general maintenance and repairs may be required.
• Report the need for repairs; request parts, tools, materials, and supplies.
• Distribute compost/soil blends to community partners via dump truck around New York City.
