Job summary

Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter & Services is seeking a part-time Shelter Support Professional to provide compassionate, non-judgmental support to guests with complex needs in a low-barrier, safe environment. The role emphasizes crisis response, safety, and advocacy, with responsibilities including intake, observation, documentation, and teamwork across care managers.

The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and experience with mental health, substance use, or homelessness

• Strong observational and situational awareness skills.
• Familiarity with trauma-informed and harm-reduction care practices.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills.
• Emotional resilience and ability to maintain professional boundaries in high-stress environments.
• Physical ability to stand, lift, clean, and perform job tasks.

Responsibilities

• Assist with client intake, screening, registration, and risk assessment.
• Observe and report changes in daily shift notes; support care plans.
• Apply trauma-informed, harm-reduction, and de-escalation techniques during crises.
• Maintain hygienic client areas and ensure safety equipment is functional.
• Record client interactions and health status in shift documentation; communicate updates to the team.
• Assist clients in accessing social, behavioral health, medical, and housing resources.
