Job summary

Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter & Services (MMHSS) is seeking a Shelter Support Professional to provide compassionate, non-judgmental support to guests with complex needs in a low-barrier setting.

You will handle client intake and risk assessment, monitor safety, respond to crises, promote trauma-informed care, and help people access housing, behavioral health, medical resources, and case management with the care team.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; behavioral health or peer support certification preferred.
• Experience with mental health, substance use, or homelessness challenges.
• Strong observational and situational awareness skills.
• Familiarity with trauma-informed and harm-reduction care practices.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills.
• Emotional resilience and ability to maintain professional boundaries in high-stress environments.
• Physical ability to stand, lift, and perform cleaning tasks.

Responsibilities

• Assist with client intake, initial screening, registration, and risk assessment.
• Observe and report changes in clients during shifts.
• Support implementation of individualized care plans.
• Conduct continuous or intermittent observation for at-risk clients.
• Apply trauma-informed, harm-reduction, and de-escalation techniques during crises.
• Maintain safe and hygienic client areas and ensure safety equipment is functional.
• Document client interactions and health status in shift notes and share updates with the team.
• Help clients access social, behavioral health, medical, and housing resources.
