Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Gastroenterology department on day shifts (40 hrs/wk). The PCT will support providers with patient care, vitals, specimen collection, and clinical documentation in a ambulatory setting.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, BLS/CPR certification, and either CENA or enrollment in a health science program (or equivalent clinical experience). Strong confidentiality and communication skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must meet one of the following: CENA certification, or enrollment in a health science program with nursing fundamentals or a clinical rotation, or equivalent experience (MA, EMT, LPN).
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology; patient confidentiality.
  • Current BLS/CPR provider required.
  • Experience in a medical practice setting preferred.
  • Able to complete unit-specific core competencies as defined in orientation.

Responsibilities

  • Escort patients on a provider schedule and record vitals and notes.
  • Collect and label specimens for POC testing (respiratory, urine, stool).
  • Perform phlebotomy and label blood specimens for lab testing.
  • Measure vital signs and weights using appropriate equipment.
  • Assist with infection control and aseptic techniques; maintain universal precautions.
  • Document chief complaints, meds, allergies, family history, and care provided in the EHR.
  • Communicate observations to the provider and coordinate care.
  • Order supplies and assist with procedures in an ambulatory setting.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support department efficiency.
